Having seen the aftermath of sun damage up close and personal, I cantell you: it's painful and regretful. Many of my dermatology patients wish they hadn't spent so much time tanning, and I've been there myself. Here are some straightforward tips to protect your skin:
1. Apply Sunscreen Daily
Incorporate sunscreen into your daily skincare routine. Even if you're not planning to be out in the sun, apply it after washing your face and applying moisturizer.
2. Use Broad Spectrum SPF 30+
Opt for broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UV rays, while SPF 50 blocks around 98%.
3. Don't Forget Hidden Areas
Apply sunscreen to often-overlooked spots like your scalp, ears, and the back of your neck. Consider wearing a hat for extra protection.
4. Reapply Regularly
Reapply every 2 hours, or more frequently if sweating or swimming. Sunscreen needs to be fresh to be effective.
5. Apply Before Going Outside
Sunscreen takes about 20-30 minutes to fully absorb, so apply it before you head outside to ensure full protection.
6. Beware of Cloudy Days
UV rays can penetrate through clouds, so you can still get sun exposure and tan on overcast days. Keep applying sunscreen regardless of the weather.
