The 'Notice & Wonder' routine invites students to observe an image closely and share what they notice and wonder about it, encouraging curiosity and open-ended questioning without fear of a wrong answer. Similarly, the 'Whos Hiding' activity involves revealing pieces of a hidden picture gradually, prompting descriptive language and collaborative thinking as students try to guess the image. Using 'Billboards/Quick Images,' teachers flash an image briefly and ask students to describe what they saw. This routine promotes attentive observation and the ability to build upon others’ ideas, fostering discourse and teamwork. In the 'You/Me Game,' learners choose numbers and create rules that classmates must guess, enhancing logical reasoning and playful interaction. Lastly, 'Fair or Not Fair?' challenges children to assess situations—such as snack distribution—and discuss fairness, encouraging ethical reasoning and empathy. Implemented regularly, these five routines nurture an interactive classroom culture where student voices are heard and valued. They support building foundational communication skills essential for academic success and social development. Additionally, the BURSTS routines by ReimaginED Teaching target different grade levels, from PreK to fifth grade, and only require 10-15 minutes, making them easy to integrate into busy school days.
