What I wish I Knew Before Getting A Septum Ring

I did a good amount of research before getting this piercing, but wanted to share some things you should know before getting one yourself! 🤭❤️

1. It can take up to a year to heal.

2. People will constantly ask “Did it hurt!?!?”

3. You have to lay upside down for the piercing. (On your back, head off the table.)

4. Blowing your nose is an absolute no until it’s healed, so cotton swabs are a must.

5. The jewelry is gonna be sideways sometimes and that’s okay. It’s best to leave it off centered vs constantly readjusting because this will prolong the healing process.

6. My nose doesn’t burn when I sneeze or cry. (I thought I would have to avoid most human functions until this piercing heals, but I don’t! 😮‍💨)

7. Absolutely find a certified piercer who specializes in piercing based on YOUR features. It took me years to find one and I’m glad I waited because I’ve seen some really jacked up piercings. This one is in the center of your face so you want it to fit YOU.

Hope these helped you prepare for your piercing! 🌻🐶✨

... Read moreOkay, so you've probably heard all sorts of 'theories' about septum piercings, right? Like what they 'mean' about a person or all the myths floating around. Before I got mine, I definitely had a few preconceived notions. But let me tell you, the real septum theory is all about personal expression and a bit of a learning curve! It's not just about the look; it's about understanding the journey, from preparation to healing, and how it subtly integrates into your daily life. The original post mentioned finding a good piercer who specializes in your features, and honestly, this is HUGE. I can't stress enough how important correct placement is. My piercer spent ages making sure it was perfectly centered and not too high or low. When you're looking at pictures online, you might see diagrams, but in person, it needs to sit in that 'sweet spot' – the thin piece of skin at the tip of your septum, just behind the cartilage. If it's too far back or through cartilage, it'll be way more painful and take longer to heal, or worse, never heal right. Always ask your piercer to mark it first and check in the mirror before they even pick up the needle! A good piercer will guide you and ensure your septum piercing placement is just right for your unique anatomy. Beyond the obvious research, what else can you do to prepare for your septum piercing process? I made sure to get a good night's sleep, eat a solid meal, and stay super hydrated beforehand. This helps your body handle the mild shock and healing process more effectively. During the actual piercing, which, yes, involves laying pretty uniquely (head off the table!), I found focusing on deep breaths really helped. It's a quick pinch, not a prolonged pain, but definitely an intense sensation. Don't be afraid to ask your piercer to walk you through each step – knowing what's happening helps calm the nerves and makes the septum piercing procedure smoother! One thing I was a bit worried about, and something I know others wonder too, especially if you wear tortoise-shell glasses like I do, is how a septum piercing interacts with eyewear. Good news! My septum piercing, even with a delicate pearl ring, doesn't interfere with my glasses at all. The placement is key here; if it's too low or the jewelry is too large, it could bump. But generally, the jewelry sits far enough forward from the bridge of your nose that it's a non-issue. I've found smaller, more snug jewelry works best initially anyway. And speaking of jewelry, yes, it will sometimes go sideways. Resist the urge to constantly adjust it, especially while healing! Just gently push it back if it's really bothering you, but mostly, let it be. Your body will eventually settle. For aftercare, beyond avoiding blowing your nose (cotton swabs are your best friend!), consistent cleaning is vital. I used a sterile saline spray twice a day, every single day, for months. Make sure your hands are spotless before touching it. Look out for excessive redness, green/yellow discharge (clear/white is usually lymph, which is normal), or throbbing pain – these are signs to contact your piercer. Remember, healing can take up to a year, but patience and diligent care make all the difference. It's totally worth it for a piercing that truly fits *you*!
