Rook Review: Funny Story by Emily Henry

I haven’t heard much about this book but I was excited to read it based off of its summary. I have read Beach Read by Emily Henry and liked it so I have Funny Story a try! It starts out really good and I can’t put it down. I liked how the characters (Daphne and Miles) got along and how you could tell who was falling first, and wasn’t scared to. I figured this would be an easy 5 star read but towards the end it began to drop. I don’t like how Miles was not in the last few chapters much. I understand they weren’t on good terms but it makes the book feel unfinished to me. Then when he does pop back up not much happens. They apologize and finally give the relationship a chance, then the next chapter skips to a year later and again not much happens. The. It’s over. It’s a cute story but I feel like I stopped reading in the middle of it and didn’t pick it back up to finish. Also once I came to the lemonade scene and understood the cover I figured that would become their “thing” and they would get lemonade throughout it. But no it was a one time thing. If it only happens once why did it make it to the cover? The only significance it has was the kiss that followed after they drank lemonade.
Idk I like the book but it feels unfinished. Deserved a better ending.

The cover of 'Funny Story' itself is a masterpiece. That charming illustration of a man and woman at a counter with drinks? It just screams 'meet-cute' and 'cozy coffee shop vibes,' even if it turned out to be a lemonade scene! For me, that visual immediately set the tone for a light, fun, and slightly quirky romance. It perfectly hints at the popular themes like "Forced Proximity" and "Roommates" that we all love in an Emily Henry novel. You see the characters, their casual interaction, and you just know you're about to dive into a story packed with witty banter and slow-burn tension. I've always been a fan of how her covers, including this one, manage to capture the essence of the story without giving too much away. They often feature vibrant colors and charming illustrations that make them instantly recognizable as an 'Emily Henry book aesthetic.' It's no wonder she’s the author of bestsellers like 'Happy Place' – her whole brand just feels good. Beyond the cover, the aesthetic of 'Funny Story' for me was all about cozy small-town settings, unexpected friendships, and that undeniable spark between Daphne and Miles. Even with my critiques about the ending, the initial atmosphere and character dynamics really shone through. The idea of two people, both ditched by their exes who then fell for each other, having to navigate shared living spaces and new beginnings, just hits all those sweet spots for a contemporary romance aesthetic. It’s interesting how the OCR mentioned the book having a 3.75-star rating. I think that rating perfectly encapsulates the experience for many readers – the initial allure of the aesthetic, the compelling premise of "Forced Proximity" and "Roommates," and the charm of Emily Henry's writing, are all there. But then, for some, the execution of the ending might just pull that rating down a little from a perfect score. Still, you can't deny the book's visual appeal and the comforting aesthetic it brings to your bookshelf. It's truly a #1 New York Times Bestseller for a reason, and a big part of that is the whole package – from the captivating cover to the promise of a heartwarming story, even if the ending leaves you pondering a bit.
