It's fascinating how sometimes, as artists, we set out with one vision and end up with something completely different, leading to a mix of emotions about our own creations. My recent digital drawing, which I affectionately (or perhaps cautiously!) nicknamed 'Cheesin',' has certainly pushed me into a deep dive of self-critique. The strong reaction I had, feeling it leaned a bit 'shrekish,' wasn't entirely planned, but it's part of the journey. When I first started sketching this digital drawing of a Black woman, I was excited to experiment with a vibrant palette, which led to the decision to give the character a distinct green skin tone. I thought it would be bold and unique, a departure from my usual, and a fun way to play with fantasy elements while still celebrating diverse representation. Paired with that, I added the element of gold grills – a detail I felt would add a touch of modern flair and undeniable personality to her broad, confident smile. My intention was to create a strong, expressive character with a unique aesthetic, and the initial concept sketches felt promising. I envisioned a lively, captivating face that would pop. However, as the layers built up and the colors solidified, particularly with the intense green tones, I started to see the unexpected. The combination of the vivid green, the broad smile revealing those prominent gold grills, and the overall stylization began to morph the character into something... well, more Ogre-like than I had intended! It's a common artistic challenge – finding the balance where exaggeration enhances rather than transforms the core idea. I recall thinking, 'Did I overdo the green? Is this too much?' It’s a fine line between unique and universally recognizable, and in this case, the 'Shrek with grillz' comparison became hard to ignore. This experience highlights a crucial aspect of being a digital artist: the continuous learning curve.
