This is my TED Talk 🤣
As a sarcastic elder millennial mom of 3, I have an entire texting language in my head, and no one can convince me otherwise.
Every text laugh has a job: 😂 LOL = I actually laughed. 🤣 HAHA = That's hilarious. 😏 HEHE = Just a tiny sprinkle of sarcasm. 💀 LMAO = You almost took me out.
Thank you for attending my TED Talk.
LOL. 🤣
Be honest.... are you an LOL, haha, hehe, or 💀 person?!?
🤣 Tag the friend who types “lol” but definitely didn’t laugh.

As someone who navigates daily life as a millennial mom, I've realized that texting isn’t just words — it’s a whole language full of nuance. Each laugh emoji or abbreviation actually tells a different story in my world. For example, when I text 😂 LOL, it means I genuinely found something funny enough to laugh out loud, not just casually acknowledge the joke. On the other hand, 🤣 HAHA feels louder and more enthusiastic, reserved for moments that truly crack me up. Then there’s 😏 HEHE, which I use as a sly nod to sarcasm or a little playful tease, signaling that there’s a hidden meaning behind what I’m saying. And don’t get me started on 💀 LMAO — that one’s the big gun reserved for when something almost makes me choke because it’s so hilarious or absurd. I’m sure many can relate to using these subtly different laughs to express exactly how we’re feeling, even when words alone aren’t enough. What’s fun is seeing how your friends use these laughs too. Some are the classic "lol" typers who don’t actually laugh, while others save the bigger emojis for special moments. Personally, I think understanding these texting cues can deepen how we communicate online. It makes us more attuned to one another’s emotions, tones, and even sarcasm — something that can easily get lost over text. I find it hilarious (pun intended) that over time, we’ve all developed this internal texting language, especially those of us juggling family, work, and social life. It’s like our own secret code that only other elder millennials understand! If you pay attention next time you text, ask yourself: are you a LOL person who laughs quietly, a HAHA who bursts out loud, a HEHE lover of sarcasm, or a 💀 who saves their biggest laughs for the really funny stuff? Sharing these subtle differences can even spark fun conversations about how we all communicate differently in this digital era. So next time you see a friend throw out a "lol" that seems a little off, just know they might be speaking their own special texting dialect — and that’s okay. After all, laughter, in all its forms, is what brings us closer, even through a screen.
