My dog had puppies!
Oh my goodness, I still can't believe it! My dog had puppies! It feels like just yesterday I was getting ready, and now we have an adorable litter of puppies wiggling around. It's been an incredible, heartwarming, and sometimes overwhelming journey, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. The first few days with these tiny 'cutie bes' are truly magical. If your dog is expecting a litter, here are a few things I've learned that might help you too. First, ensure the mother dog has a quiet, comfortable, and warm space for whelping. We set up a special whelping box in a secluded corner, making sure it was draft-free and easy for her to get in and out of, but secure enough to keep the newborns safe. Once the litter arrived, the immediate priority was keeping the puppies warm. Newborn puppies can't regulate their own body temperature, so a heat lamp or heating pad (set to a safe temperature and covered) is essential. I made sure to place it so the puppies could move away if they got too warm, which is super important for their safety. Observing them constantly was key – if they were huddled together, they were cold; if they were spread out, they might be too warm. Feeding is another big one. Thankfully, my dog is an amazing mom and started nursing her litter right away. It’s vital to ensure every puppy gets a chance to feed, especially the smaller ones. Sometimes, I had to gently guide them to a nipple, but mostly, mom had it covered. Watching them nurse is just the sweetest thing; you can literally see them getting stronger every day. The sound of their tiny squeaks and suckling is now the soundtrack to my home. Keeping the whelping box clean is also a daily task. Puppies are born blind and deaf, completely reliant on their mom for everything, including stimulation to go to the bathroom. Mom usually takes care of this by licking them clean, but having clean bedding is crucial to prevent infections and keep everyone comfortable. I changed the blankets frequently, always making sure to replace them with warm, fresh ones. As they grow, you'll notice incredible changes. Their eyes start to open around 10-14 days, and that's when their little personalities really begin to emerge. They start to wobble around, trying out their legs, and those first clumsy steps are just adorable. Each one is a unique 'cutie be,' and I find myself spending hours just watching them sleep, twitch, and dream. It’s a huge responsibility, but the unconditional love and joy these 'litter puppies' bring are beyond words. Every day is an adventure, filled with 'XOXO Muah' moments as I watch them grow and thrive. If you're considering welcoming a litter, be prepared for sleepless nights and endless cuddles, but also for one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
