Moving to Madrid đŸ‡Ē🇸

This fall semester I am moving to Madrid!

I go to IE University and I started at the Segovia Campus and now I am moving to the Madrid one. I need advice on everything Madrid. From finding an apartment to the best places to get pizza I want to know everything so I can make the most of my time there!

Even if you have advice on living in a big city in general that will also be super helpful!

... Read moreMoving to a vibrant city like Madrid is such an exciting step, and trust me, I've been there! When I first moved, I wished I had a checklist of things to consider. Here’s what I learned and what I’d pass on to anyone making the big leap to Madrid, especially if you’re coming from a smaller campus like Segovia. First off, let's talk about finding an apartment. The market in Madrid can be competitive, so start your search early. Websites like Idealista and Fotocasa are your best friends. Be prepared for agencies charging a month's rent as a fee, though you can sometimes find direct landlords. Consider areas close to your university campus, but also think about metro access. Neighborhoods like ArgÃŧelles, Monclao, or Ciudad Universitaria are popular with students, offering a lively atmosphere and good transport links. Don't be afraid to broaden your search slightly – sometimes great deals pop up in less obvious spots with excellent metro connections. When viewing places, pay close attention to heating/AC (Madrid summers are hot, winters can be chilly!), natural light, and noise levels, especially if you're close to a busy street. And always, always read the contract carefully before signing. Maybe even have a Spanish-speaking friend look it over for you! Beyond housing, getting around Madrid is a breeze once you get the hang of it. The public transport system (metro, bus, cercanías) is fantastic and very affordable with a 'Tarjeta de Transporte PÃēblico' (public transport card). For students under 26, the Abono Joven is a lifesaver, giving you unlimited travel across the entire region for a low monthly fee. Download apps like Citymapper or Google Maps to navigate like a pro. Exploring on foot is also a must – you discover so much more just by wandering the beautiful streets. And since you mentioned pizza – oh, Madrid has some fantastic spots! While Spanish cuisine is incredible, sometimes you just crave a good slice. For authentic Neapolitan style, check out Grosso Napoletano or Fratelli La Bufala. For something a bit more gourmet, try Oven Mozzarella Bar. But honestly, don't limit yourself to just pizza! Dive into the local food scene. Tapas are a way of life here. Head to La Latina on a Sunday for a lively tapas crawl, or explore Mercado de San Miguel for a sensory overload of Spanish delicacies. Don't forget to try a traditional Bocadillo de Calamares in Plaza Mayor – it's a Madrid classic! Making friends and settling into Spanish culture takes a little effort but it's incredibly rewarding. MadrileÃąos are generally very welcoming. Try joining university clubs, language exchange groups (intercambios), or even sports teams. Learning some basic Spanish phrases will go a long way, not just for practicalities but for connecting with locals. Embrace the late-night dining culture, the afternoon siestas (even if you're not napping, just enjoying the slower pace), and the vibrant social scene. Madrid truly comes alive at night. The grand, illuminated buildings, like the one you might spot with a McDonald's on the ground floor, are just a preview of the stunning architecture and lively atmosphere. One final piece of advice: bureaucracy can be a pain. Getting your NIE (foreigner identification number), opening a bank account, or registering at the 'padrÃŗn' can feel overwhelming. Be patient, bring all your documents (and copies!), and don't be afraid to ask for help from university resources or expat groups. It all gets sorted eventually! Living in a big city like Madrid is an incredible experience. There will be challenges, but the rewards – the culture, the food, the people, the endless opportunities – far outweigh them. Soak it all in, be open to new experiences, and enjoy every moment in this amazing city!
