... Read moreOh my gosh, you know those perfect beach days you dream of? Well, sometimes reality hits, and you get a windy beach day that's more about survival than sunbathing! Just like in the picture, where I practically became one with the sand, face down trying to escape the onslaught! It was wild. My friend even ended up with a towel over their head in a makeshift sand pit – talk about dedicated relaxation!
I've had my share of windy day at the beach experiences, and I've learned a few things. First, how windy is too windy for the beach? For me, if the sand is stinging your legs before you even set up, or if your towel needs to be weighted down with rocks just to stay put, it's definitely pushing the limits. The moment your snacks get a 'sand coating' before you even open them, that's usually my cue to find some shelter or consider a different activity. You can still enjoy the *windy vibes*, but maybe from a café nearby!
But if you're determined to brave it, here are my top tips for surviving a super *windy beach day*:
Embrace the Sand Pit: Seriously, dig a small trench for your towel or blanket. It provides a little barrier from the worst of the flying sand. Or, like my friend, just cover your head with a towel!
Pack Smart: Forget loose, flowy clothes. Think snug swimwear, maybe a rash guard. And definitely bring a large, heavy beach bag that won't blow away. Those beach bags, shoes, and toys scattered in the picture? They were all getting a good sand exfoliation!
Hydration is Key: The wind can be deceivingly dehydrating. Keep water close, but sealed!
Protect Your Eyes & Skin: Sunglasses are non-negotiable. A wide-brimmed hat (one that you can tie down!) helps, too. And sunscreen, always!
Snack Smart: Avoid anything that will easily blow away or collect sand. Sandwiches in sealed containers are better than loose chips.
Find Natural Barriers: Look for dunes, large rocks, or even beach amenities like buildings and palm trees for some natural shelter. The background in the picture shows some of these, which we tried to utilize.
Adjust Your Expectations: Sometimes, a windy day at the beach isn't about perfectly tanning. It's about the bracing air, the wild waves, and making memories. Don't fight the wind; work with it! Maybe it's a great day for kite flying (just make sure it doesn't become a windy cloak around you!).
While it might not be the idyllic beach scene from a movie, a windy beach day can still be an adventure. You just need to be prepared for the elements and have a good sense of humor. Who knows, you might even get a funny story out of it, just like I did with my impromptu sand burial!
