When I talk about rainbow chickens, I'm not just talking about their beautiful feathers, though my Lavender Orpingtons are absolutely stunning with their soft purple-grey plumage. What I really mean is the incredible variety of egg colors my flock provides, turning every egg collection into a treasure hunt!
My current stars are my Marans and Silverudd's Blues, along with those gorgeous Lavender Orpingtons. Let me tell you a bit about them and what makes them perfect for a colorful egg basket.
First, the Marans! Oh, how I adore their rich, dark chocolate brown eggs. It's like finding little gems in the nesting boxes. They add such a deep, earthy tone to my egg cartons. Plus, Marans are generally calm and friendly birds, which is a huge bonus.
Then we have the Silverudd's Blues, often just called Silverudds. These guys are my blue and green egg layers! Their eggs have this beautiful, almost pastel blue or sometimes a lovely sage green hue. It's always a surprise to see what shade I'll get each day. They are active and hardy birds, and their striking feather patterns are a joy to watch as they free-range, especially after a good rain when the grass is lush, just like my girls were enjoying recently!
And of course, my Lavender Orpingtons. While they don't lay blue or dark brown eggs, their light brown to sometimes pinkish-cream eggs are a wonderful addition to the mix. Beyond their eggs, their gentle temperament and fluffy appearance make them incredibly lovable members of the flock. Watching them forage in the fresh grass is just so relaxing.
If you're dreaming of your own rainbow egg collection, here’s a little secret: it’s all about choosing the right breeds! Besides the ones I have, you might consider adding Ameraucanas or Easter Eggers for more blues and greens. Welsummers also lay beautiful dark brown, often speckled eggs, similar to Marans. And for pure white, you can't beat a Leghorn!
It’s not just about the egg colors, though. Each breed has its own personality, and getting to know them is part of the fun. My Silverudds and Orpingtons absolutely thrive when they get to roam and peck around in the fresh grass, especially after a refreshing rain. It keeps them happy and healthy, which in turn means healthy, beautiful eggs for my kitchen. Collecting eggs every day feels like opening a gift, and I absolutely love sharing my colorful bounty with friends and family. It’s truly a little piece of magic right in my backyard!
