The past year has taught me more about strength than I ever asked to learn.
I’m going through a divorce while raising my son on my own in our home. I’ve shown up to every hearing, communicated respectfully, and done everything I’m supposed to do as a tenant — without ever causing a single issue for my apartment community.
Recently, after I lawfully appealed a court ruling and requested full access to my tenant records — something Virginia law gives me the right to request — everything changed.
Communication shifted overnight.
Instead of acknowledging the specific part of my request — the part asking for all communications about my unit and about me, including any that involve my estranged spouse or property staff — I was given a partial file that left those records out entirely.
When I politely clarified what I was requesting under the law, suddenly my estranged spouse — the person I’m actively divorcing, who no longer lives here — was copied on emails about my legal matters. That has never happened before. It only began after I asked for transparency and documentation.
Not only does that feel unprofessional — it feels unsafe.
I should not have to worry about whether my own housing provider is:
• withholding documents I’m legally entitled to
• changing how they communicate the moment I assert my rights
• looping my opposing party into my private housing communications during a divorce
My home should feel like a safe place — not another battleground.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not alone. So many people quietly navigate divorce, custody, financial stress, and housing insecurity — all while trying to protect their children and follow the law.
If that’s you too:
🖤 Keep records
🖤 Know your rights
🖤 Don’t let fear silence you
I have tried every respectful, reasonable channel.
I have asked nicely.
I have acted in good faith.
And now?
I know my rights. I know the law. And escalation isn’t drama — it’s accountability. ♟️#virginia #landlordtenant #privacy #happeningnow
