Honestly I didn’t think this would ever be a show I would do (and soon didn’t think I’d be able to do because of work and I also thought I had nodes lol) but I had a blast performing along side these incredibly talented peeps!
... Read moreOh my gosh, the closing night of a musical is such a whirlwind of emotions! You spend weeks, sometimes months, with this incredible group of people, pouring your heart and soul into a show like Footloose. For our North Brunswick Drama Group's Summer 2024 run, that final curtain call felt incredibly bittersweet. On one hand, you're buzzing with the energy of the audience, everyone on stage giving it their absolute all during that iconic 'Everybody Cut Footloose' dance number. It's truly a stage performance scene you'll never forget – the lights, the music, the collective joy. The sheer exuberance of the Footloose finale, with everyone dancing their hearts out, is something truly special.
But then, as the applause starts to die down and you head backstage, that's when the 'soft goodbyes' really begin to hit. It's not just saying goodbye to the packed house, but to the characters we’ve loved, the routines we’ve perfected, and this amazing makeshift family. There's so much laughter and excitement, but also a quiet understanding that this chapter is closing. We exchanged hugs, signed each other's programs, and took countless 'that's a wrap' photos with the entire cast members, some still in our cowboy hats from the final scene. These little rituals are so important for processing the end of such an intense, beautiful experience. The bond you form with your fellow cast members is truly unique; you see each other at your most vulnerable and your most triumphant.
I remember grabbing a refreshing Starbucks cup after the show – it's a small tradition for many of us to wind down and chat about all the incredible moments. We talked about our favorite backstage antics, the moments we almost broke character, and how much we'd grown together. It's a reminder that even when the stage lights dim, the friendships and memories shine on. From tech rehearsals to final performances, every moment is etched in your memory.
For anyone who's ever been part of a show, or dreams of being on stage, know that the finale is a unique blend of exhilaration and melancholy. It’s about celebrating what you’ve achieved, cherishing the bonds formed, and looking forward to the next adventure, even as you hold onto the magic of the one that just ended. To help ease the post-show blues, I always try to plan a little get-together with the cast, or even just re-watch some of the rehearsal videos to relive the fun. Keeping a journal throughout the process can also be a wonderful way to capture all those fleeting backstage moments and heartfelt goodbyes. It's a testament to the power of theatre, where even the goodbyes are filled with a special kind of love. It was truly a blast, and I’m already dreaming of the next time I get to step onto a stage!
