The difference between store-bought eggs and backyard eggs mainly comes down to freshness, nutrition, taste, and how the hens are raised. Store-bought eggs can be several weeks old by the time they reach shelves, while backyard eggs are usually eaten within days of being laid, making them much fresher. Backyard eggs often have deeper orange yolks, firmer whites, and a richer flavor because the hens usually forage for grass, bugs, and a more varied diet, whereas store-bought eggs often have pale yolks and thinner whites due to the hens’ standardized feed. Nutritionally, backyard eggs contain higher levels of omega-3s, vitamins A, E, and D, and sometimes lower cholesterol, while conventional store-bought eggs are more uniform and less nutrient-dense.
