when “me time” becomes a battlefield

I’m an outcome-driven person. I like plans, I like efficiency, and I like checking boxes. But last night reminded me that motherhood doesn’t care about my roadmap.

Bedtime had a "goal," and when that goal wasn’t met, I hit a wall.

When the screaming starts and the minutes of your "me time" start vanishing, the exhaustion hits differently. It’s not just being tired; it’s the physical drain of your nervous system being pushed to its limit. I felt the rage. I felt the guilt. I felt the grief for the hour of peace I thought I was going to have.

I’m realising my rage usually comes from my own expectations of how things should go. I treat sleep like a task to be completed, but he’s not a project.

Last night was plain hard. Today, I’m letting go of the "outcome" and just trying to breathe through the process. 🏳️

... Read moreAs a parent, especially a mom navigating the toddler years, I completely relate to the exhausting battle of bedtime routines and how it can transform cherished "me time" into a stressful ordeal. Like many, I grew up valuing productivity and efficiency, so when bedtime doesn't go as planned — for example, when a toddler fights sleep past their usual bedtime — it feels like a personal challenge to my sense of order. One thing that has helped me is shifting my mindset from treating sleep as a "task" or goal to be checked off to embracing the process with patience and empathy. Toddlers often have difficulty settling down due to developmental milestones, separation anxiety, or simply needing extra comfort. Forcing a strict schedule sometimes backfires, leading to more frustration for both parent and child. I’ve found that incorporating softer activities like reading a book, playing calming music, or simply sitting quietly with my child can create a more soothing transition without making it a high-pressure event. It’s natural to feel guilt or anger when ’me time’ slips away, but understanding that toddlers aren’t resisting on purpose — they just can’t always regulate their sleep needs or emotions — helps to alleviate some of that stress. Furthermore, it’s important to give yourself grace. When the nervous system is pushed to its limit by the combination of exhaustion and emotional intensity, it’s okay to acknowledge those feelings rather than suppressing them. Sometimes, stepping back, taking a few deep breaths, and letting go of rigid expectations restores a sense of calm and connection. Remember, motherhood is not a project with deadlines. It’s a journey full of unpredictable moments. By releasing the pressure to meet an outcome and simply focusing on being present, you gradually reclaim your peace during those tough evenings. "Me time" might not always be predictable or uninterrupted, but these experiences can deepen your understanding of your child and yourself — turning battlefield moments into opportunities for growth and love.

Recently, I started my part-time master’s at SUSS, and having full-day classes on Saturdays has been a big adjustment!!!! Saturdays used to be my rest day, but now with work on weekdays (plus the occasional OT sobs) and other commitments on Sundays, weekends feel really different and packed 😭

Hey Zesties, Let’s #BeReal part-time studies and full-time work is freaking hard! It’s definitely not for everyone. Let me share my experience. My 6 years of my university journey was full of ups and downs. Most of my peers completed their degree within 3 or 4 yrs. Well not for me sadly.

I am in my 40s and I feel it too. Who else?
Is it just affecting those in their 30s? I don’t think so. Even in my 40s, I feel it too. These days, everyone is trying so hard to protect their own rice bowl… that sometimes the pressure gets pushed onto someone else. And that’s how toxic environments are created and  not because people
