... Read moreYou know that feeling, right? That morning when you woke up with a burst of energy, feeling like you could tackle anything? And then, almost immediately, your brain starts the internal monologue: 'Today's the day! I'm going to finally do that workout!' But before you even finish the thought, another voice chimes in, perhaps a little more comfortable and persuasive, whispering, 'Or... you could just keep thinking about it later.' That's pretty much my life motto some days!
This hilarious quote from my image really hit home for me, and I bet it does for many of you too. It's the ultimate meme for anyone who’s ever had grand fitness intentions only to be defeated by the sheer comfort of staying put. We've all been there, mentally signing up for a marathon while physically still contemplating rolling out of bed. It’s the constant push-and-pull between our aspirations and our immediate desire for comfort.
Why is it so hard to translate that initial burst of energy into actual movement? For me, it's often a combination of factors. Sometimes it’s the daunting thought of the effort involved, other times it’s simply the allure of an extra 30 minutes of scrolling. The gym can feel like a battlefield, and sometimes, my couch just looks like a much more appealing victor’s podium. And let's be honest, thinking about exercise technically still counts as engaging with the concept, right? 😉
I've learned to laugh at myself and these moments. Instead of beating myself up for not always following through, I try to find small victories. Maybe today I didn't do a full HIIT session, but I did take a quick walk around the block, or even just stretched for five minutes. It’s about building those tiny habits, even if some mornings are still dedicated to intense mental workout planning.
One thing I’ve found helpful is to reduce the friction. If I lay out my workout clothes the night before, or even just put on my sneakers while I'm still feeling that initial morning energy, it makes the jump from 'thinking' to 'doing' a little less Olympic-sized. Or, sometimes, I just put on my favorite workout playlist and tell myself, 'I’ll just listen to one song.' More often than not, one song turns into two, and before I know it, I’m actually moving!
It's a journey, not a sprint, especially when it comes to motivation. And sometimes, the funniest part of the journey is acknowledging the ridiculousness of our own internal struggles. So, if you're like me and often find yourself in a deep philosophical debate with your inner couch potato about whether to really exercise today, know that you're not alone. Let's embrace the humor in our human tendencies and maybe, just maybe, use that initial burst of energy to at least stand up and refill our water bottle. Baby steps, folks!
