Why don't women study philosophy?
Why are there so few women studying philosophy? In general, the proportion of women in the Faculty of Letters is high, but in the Department of Philosophy, the proportion of women is often low. There are few women who want to study philosophy or read philosophy books in the first place. Why is that? I made several hypotheses, but I thought that women do not seek salvation in philosophy when they are lost in life, but in religion. However, I went to traditional religions, new religions, monotheism, polytheism, and everything I could go, but the proportion of male believers was higher than female believers everywhere. Another hypothesis is that the decisive difference between men and women is that women experience childbirth. No human being can experience death until death, but women experience that they produce the body of a child. Women live with the awareness that they will someday give birth to children from the time they remember. It is inevitable that they are liberated from relativizing their own lives with children and sticking to their own lives like men. I am a man, but I think so vaguely.
「哲学」を検索してここに来た人の多くは、哲学そのものの定義や役立ち方、そして“どうやって始めればいいか”を知りたいのだと思います。私自身も最初は、哲学が「頭のいい人の議論」みたいに見えて距離がありました。でも読み進めるうちに、哲学は意外と生活の言葉に近いと感じるようになりました。たとえば「なぜ生きるのか」「自分は何者か」「正しさは誰が決めるのか」みたいな問いは、人生で迷った瞬間に自然と湧いてきます。 この記事のテーマである「なぜ女性は哲学を学ばないのか？」については、学ぶ／学ばないを性別で単純化できない前提は置きつつも、“哲学への入口がどんな形で用意されているか”は大きい気がします。哲学書の多くは、抽象語が多く、議論の前提（西洋思想史や論理学的な作法）を暗黙に要求します。これが「読む前に体力がいる」壁になりやすい。一方で、宗教や心理学、自己啓発は体験談や物語から入れるものが多く、悩みの局面ではそちらが先に手に取りやすい…というのは実感としてあります。 また、画像（哲学書を読む男性と、赤ちゃんを抱く女性の対比）のように、ケアや育児の時間が生活の中心に入りやすい人ほど、まとまった“思索の時間”が取りにくい現実もあります。哲学は短時間でも読めますが、集中して概念を追う必要があり、細切れ時間だとつらい。これは能力の問題ではなく、環境の問題として語ったほうが建設的だと思いました。 「哲学を始めたい」人向けに、私がとっつきやすかった入口も書いておきます。 ・まずは“問い”で選ぶ：『ソクラテスの弁明』のように、人生と直結したテーマから入ると読みやすいです。 ・1冊丸ごと読破を目標にしない：序論や解説、章のまとめだけでも十分得るものがあります。 ・日常に接続する：育児・仕事・恋愛・介護など、具体的な経験を「それって何が正しいの？」「私が当たり前と思ってる前提は？」と問い直すだけで、もう哲学っぽい作業が始まっています。 結局、「哲学を学ぶ人が少ない」のは女性に限らず、哲学が入口で損をしている面もあると思います。だからこそ、難しい言葉の前に、“自分の人生の実感”から哲学へつなげるルートを増やせたら、もっと身近になるはずです。
