Let me start by saying you cannot cure acne you can only manage it. Typically acne is genetic, approximately 50-90% of acne is due to genetic variation in the affected individuals and can only be treated with topical or oral medication, changes in lifestyle and a consistent skincare routine.
What has helped me is tretinoin. People either love or hate this topical but if you tried it and haven’t had success it may be the percentage and or brand you’re using.
My favorite is Treninoin 0.1 by Perrigo
In the summer I received a refill that was the same percentage but by a different brand/distributor. I didn’t think much of it because the percentages were the same but, upon using it my skin immediately freaked out! I was getting all of the bad side effects associated with Tretinoin (purging, dryness, irritation & flaking) and none of the benefits. I also noticed the consistency of this formula was slightly different compared to the Perrigo brand.
Keep in mind I had been on Tretinoin for almost a year at that point and had surpassed the purging phase. I decided to contact the pharmacy and asked them to switch it back and that resolved the issues.
So if you haven’t had any luck I’d give this brand a try or look into others as everyone’s skin is different.
... Read moreManaging acne, especially when it's rooted in genetics, can feel like an endless battle. Like many, I've learned that while there's no 'cure,' a consistent and tailored approach can make a world of difference. My journey with Tretinoin has been transformative, as you've read, but it's just one piece of the puzzle for a truly effective acne management routine. The 'How I treat ACNE' philosophy extends beyond prescription treatments to the everyday products we choose.
Understanding your acne type, whether it's genetic, fungal, or hormonal, as highlighted in that helpful graphic about 'TYPES OF ACNE,' is crucial. For me, knowing my acne was largely genetic helped me accept that long-term management, rather than a quick fix, was the key. This often means incorporating a range of products that support skin health and target specific concerns, alongside powerful prescriptions like Tretinoin.
Many of you, like me, are probably curious about popular over-the-counter options, especially brands like CeraVe and La Roche-Posay, which are often recommended by pharmacists for acne-prone skin. I've personally experimented with various products from these lines to find what truly complements my Tretinoin routine and helps maintain clear, healthy skin.
When it comes to CeraVe, their cleansers are often a go-to. I've found their Foaming Facial Cleanser to be incredibly effective at removing impurities and excess oil without stripping my skin, which is vital when using Tretinoin. For reducing breakouts, their Salicylic Acid Cleanser is also a popular choice, gentle enough for daily use and great for targeting blemishes. Many CeraVe products, including their moisturizers, are formulated with essential ceramides. I've found that the concentration of ceramides in CeraVe moisturizers, like the PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion, is absolutely sufficient for daily skincare needs, helping to restore and maintain the skin's natural barrier. This is especially important for preventing dryness and irritation when on Tretinoin. I've also had success with CeraVe's Resurfacing Retinol Serum for post-acne marks and discoloration, which works synergistically with Tretinoin to improve skin texture and tone. And for sun protection, which is non-negotiable, their Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen is a great non-comedogenic option that doesn't clog pores or feel heavy, crucial for preventing dark spots and further breakouts. It's reassuring to know these products are often non-comedogenic and cater well to combination skin types without leaving residue.
Similarly, La Roche-Posay offers excellent options. Their Effaclar Purifying Foaming Gel Cleanser is another favorite for acne-prone skin. It’s effective yet gentle, leaving my skin feeling clean and refreshed without any tightness. I've noticed that incorporating products from these trusted brands into my routine has significantly enhanced the overall effectiveness of my acne management. They provide the necessary support for skin barrier health, hydration, and gentle exfoliation, creating a balanced environment for my skin to thrive, especially when it's battling the challenges of genetic acne and potent treatments.
Ultimately, a successful acne journey is about finding what works best for your skin, understanding its unique needs (like genetic predispositions), and building a routine with products you can trust. My advice is to introduce new products slowly and observe how your skin reacts, just as I learned the hard way with different Tretinoin brands.
So sorry for your loss. And yes, genetics can be strange. My parents did not deal with acne but me and my brother do. It does get better once you get a good routine! I still get a minor breakouts around my cycle as well.
My genetics must’ve skipped some generations then recessive af, bc both my mom & dad were so concerned like why my acne was(past tense only cus dad is dead not bc my acne cleared up 🙄) SO bad in my adulthood!! Like I was 21 & now 27 still raging acne that flares up around my period time.
