Parenting in the negotiation era

Lately I’ve realized that parenting feels less like giving instructions and more like… constant negotiation.

About snacks.

About timing.

About why standing in traffic is not an option.

I wrote a blog this week about this phase — what’s actually happening when kids push back, why it’s normal, and how to hold boundaries without disconnecting.

If you’re in this season too, you’re not doing it wrong.

You’re just parenting a tiny negotiator.

... Read moreParenting during the negotiation era can feel like a daily challenge of balancing authority with empathy. This phase often begins in toddlerhood when children start asserting their autonomy, turning everyday decisions—from snacks and bedtimes to safety concerns like crossing the street—into negotiations. It’s important to recognize that this behavior isn’t defiance or bad behavior but a natural way for children to test boundaries and explore their influence. Successful navigation of this era involves acknowledging your child's feelings and validating their emotions without compromising essential safety and household rules. For example, when a child says, "I don't want to understand," it might seem like closing off dialogue, but it also signals a boundary of emotional capacity in that moment. Parents can respond by recognizing the child's feelings while gently reinforcing the boundary that must stand. Not every interaction needs to be a teaching moment. Sometimes, quick decisions must be made prioritizing safety or calm, indicating that some moments require a parent to take charge without extensive explanation. However, in conversations where feelings run high, using validation can build trust and connection, helping children feel heard. Ultimately, parenting in the negotiation era is about managing this dance between granting autonomy and maintaining necessary limits. It requires patience, consistency, and emotional intelligence. Understanding that your child is not trying to outwit you but is navigating their emerging independence can shape a more mindful approach. Embrace this phase knowing that holding firm boundaries with empathy fosters both connection and discipline, preparing your child for healthy decision-making in the future.
