My recent post on picking your ideal reading aesthetic really got me thinking, especially about diving deep into my favorite genre: fantasy! Finding the right fantasy story can sometimes feel like a quest in itself, especially when you're looking for something specific, like an urban fantasy audiobook with a strong female lead, or a grimdark epic that will consume your weekend. That's where the magic of sorting by subgenre comes in, and I've found a few platforms that are absolute game-changers for discovering those hidden gems! First up, Audible. It's probably the most well-known, and for good reason. While it doesn't always have a direct "subgenre" filter for fantasy in the main search (frustrating, I know!), I've got a trick for you. Head to their 'Browse' section, then 'Genres & Categories,' and click on 'Fantasy.' From there, look for the "Customers Also Bought" or "Similar Titles" sections on individual book pages. This often leads you down a rabbit hole of specific subgenres like 'Epic Fantasy,' 'High Fantasy,' 'Urban Fantasy,' or 'Paranormal Fantasy.' Another tip is to use Google to search for "Audible [specific fantasy subgenre] audiobooks" – sometimes external searches yield better results! Next, Libby/Overdrive (for library lovers like me!). This is a fantastic free resource. While the filtering isn't as robust as a dedicated store, many libraries categorize their fantasy audiobooks quite well. You can often filter by 'Genre: Fantasy' and then browse or sometimes even search within results for keywords like "urban," "epic," "cozy," or "litRPG" to narrow it down. Plus, nothing beats the thrill of borrowing a popular audiobook for free! For those who love to own their books outside of Audible, Kobo Audiobooks and Google Play Books are great alternatives. Kobo, in particular, often has more granular tagging, and I've had success searching directly for "[fantasy subgenre] audiobooks" within their platforms. They might not have a dedicated 'subgenre' filter button, but their search algorithms are pretty good at pulling up relevant titles if you know what to type. And don't forget the power of communities! Goodreads is my absolute go-to for finding new fantasy audiobooks and discovering subgenres. Search for 'Fantasy' and then dive into lists like 'Best Urban Fantasy Audiobooks' or 'Top Epic Fantasy Series.' You can then check if these titles are available on your preferred audiobook platform. Similar communities exist on Reddit (r/Fantasy, r/Audiobooks) where dedicated readers curate lists and discuss specific subgenres extensively. Once you’ve found that perfect fantasy audiobook – whether it’s a sprawling epic or a charming cozy fantasy – make sure your listening environment is just as perfect! My OCR results reminded me of how important those details are. Imagine listening to a thrilling fantasy quest while wrapped in your favorite chunky knit blanket, sipping on a warm mug of tea, with the rain pattering softly outside your window. Or maybe it's a sunny day, and you're enjoying a light urban fantasy with an iced latte in hand. That’s the ultimate ideal reading (or listening!) experience right there.
