A Reminder to First Time Writers

The first draft will not be perfect. It won’t be error free and finely crafted. AND THAT’S OKAY. It doesn’t have to be. The fine-tuning will definitely come later.

The point is to get it all roughly down—the thoughts and ideas and characters that have been living rent free in your head.

The first draft is the frame work, the bones, the destination still being mapped out. Your words will not be publisher ready as soon as you type them, so don’t put pressure on yourself to have the perfect, most articulate sentences with complex characters, and an intricate plot. It’s a waste of time and will only leave you stuck in the same barely moving pace with no completion in sight.

Just. Start. Writing.

What many don’t realize (or consider) is that when crafting the first draft, you don’t have to start with chapter one. You can begin with the bloody battle scene you’ve envisioned in your mind a thousand times. Or with dialogue of banter and tension between characters. Hell, let it be a heart breaking, tear-inducing moment with no context or character introduction that makes absolutely no sense off paper. Every glimpse of the story your imagination conjures—write it. Because through the process, you’re exploring, learning, and weaving together your story one sentence—one word, at a time.

Just some food for thought…okay, bye.❤️

... Read moreWriting can be an intimidating endeavor, especially for those embarking on their first journey as authors. It's crucial to understand that the initial draft is just a starting point, not a final product. Many budding writers fall into the trap of perfectionism, believing that their first words must be polished and profound. However, this mindset can lead to frustration and writer's block. Instead of striving for immediate perfection, focus on unearthing your ideas and narratives freely. Think of the first draft as your story’s blueprint—an exploration of thoughts, character sketches, and plot outlines without the pressure of finality. Accept that the first draft will inevitably include rough edges and areas needing improvement, as these flaws are part of the creative process. Moreover, if you find yourself stuck, remember that writing doesn’t have to be linear. Start with any scene that excites you—the dramatic conflict or poignant dialogue. This method not only makes the writing experience more enjoyable but also motivates you to continue. Many successful authors credit their first drafts as chaotic and messy, yet they embraced this chaos to produce their masterpieces through revisions. Ultimately, allow your voice and ideas to take shape without restrictions. Start today, even if it feels daunting, because every word you write is a step closer to achieving your writing aspirations.
