Having cared for houseplants for years, I've found that not all greenery thrives in bright sunlight—something I initially overlooked. For instance, the ZZ Plant, which many assume craves sunlight, actually flourishes in lower light conditions. Placing it on a shaded shelf instead of a sunny windowsill prevented its leaves from turning yellow or bleached. Similarly, the Calathea Makoyana amazed me with its delicate leaf patterns that fade quickly under direct sun. Moving mine to a soft light corner brought back its vibrant colors and intricate details. The Aglaonema "Silver Queen" is another favorite that responds poorly to strong, direct rays, as its silver-toned leaves burn easily. I found it brightens up dim hallways beautifully without needing constant sunlight. The Cast Iron Plant surprised me with its resilience in low-light environments—it's one of the easiest plants to care for in spots that receive little natural light. However, direct sun leaves brown marks, so I keep mine away from window glare. Keeping these plants off the windowsill and in cozy, shaded corners not only protects their leaves but also contributes to a calm, inviting home atmosphere. This experience taught me to read each plant’s light preferences carefully and challenge the old gardening myth that more sun always means healthier plants.
