The biggest mistake Fiddle Leaf owners make🍂

I used to think black spots meant my Fiddle Leaf Fig needed more water

Turns out I was making the problem worse

This is the rescue routine that finally worked for me🌿

... Read moreWhen I first noticed black spots and dropping leaves on my Fiddle Leaf Fig, I instinctively gave it more water, thinking it was thirsty. Unfortunately, this common mistake actually worsened the condition because the underlying issue was root rot caused by overly wet soil, not dehydration. From personal experience, the key to rescuing a struggling Fiddle Leaf Fig lies in carefully assessing the roots. Pulling the plant out gently, washing the roots, and trimming away any black, mushy parts makes a huge difference. After that, treating the roots with a mild 3% hydrogen peroxide spray helps eliminate lingering pathogens, promoting a healthier environment for recovery. Repotting with a chunky, well-draining soil mix that includes components like perlite and orchid bark is essential to prevent waterlogging. This mix improves aeration, letting roots breathe and reducing the risk of rot returning. Crucially, I held off watering for about five days after repotting to allow the roots time to recover fully. Going forward, the best practice is to water the Fiddle Leaf Fig only when the top three inches of soil are completely dry. Overwatering is almost always the culprit behind black spots and leaf drop. In addition, providing bright, indirect light supports the plant's health and encourages new leaf growth. I’ve also started using plant identification apps to verify care needs of my houseplants. For example, apps that scan and provide watering schedules and light requirements have helped me better understand each plant's specific demands, preventing guesswork and protecting my leafy friends from common care mistakes. By following this approach, my Fiddle Leaf Fig not only survived but started thriving again, with new leaves emerging and no further signs of rot. If your plant shows similar symptoms, this routine might just save it too—remember, less water and good drainage are the keys to a happy Fiddle Leaf Fig.
