Would You Count Vatican City As a country traveled

When talking to other people about what countries you have been to, do you(or would you) count Vatican City as its own country?

Because idk if it really counts

... Read moreAfter finally visiting Vatican City, I couldn't help but wonder: does it truly count as a separate country on my travel tally? It's a question that pops up in almost every travel forum, and honestly, the answer isn't as straightforward as you might think! From a political and legal standpoint, Vatican City is absolutely its own sovereign state. It has its own government, issues its own passports (though you won't get a stamp upon entry for tourism, unfortunately!), has its own currency (Euro, but they mint their own special coins), and even maintains diplomatic relations with countries worldwide. It's the smallest independent state in the world, a true microstate. But does that automatically mean it qualifies for your personal "countries visited" list? When I walked through those incredible halls, surrounded by awe-inspiring classical statues and busts, and gazed at the sheer grandeur of the Sistine Chapel, it certainly felt like a distinct experience from just being in Rome. The atmosphere shifts, the architecture tells a different story, and you're acutely aware you're in a place with immense historical and religious significance, distinct from Italy. The security, the Pope's Swiss Guard – it all contributes to a sense of being in a unique, independent entity. However, some travelers have a stricter definition. They might argue that because you don't typically go through border control, or because it's entirely surrounded by Rome, it's more like an enclave than a separate travel destination to 'count.' Some purists might only count places that are UN member states, which Vatican City isn't (it has permanent observer status). For me, though, the criteria often come down to: did I intentionally travel there as a distinct destination? Did it offer a unique cultural or political experience? And for Vatican City, the answer is a resounding 'yes' on both counts! Ultimately, I've decided to add it to my list. For me, the experience of exploring its grand museum halls, witnessing its unique governance, and soaking in its profound history was undeniably different from just exploring Italy. It's a personal tally, after all, and what matters most is the journey and the memories. So, if you're like me and wondering about 'vacation city country' status, I say, embrace the debate but follow your own travel heart!
