Why did I take such a long break from art?

For years now I’ve been so focused on finding “my art style” and being original that I lost sight of how lovely it is to paint something that simply makes you happy.

I found a photo on Pinterest and felt inspired to recreate it. I’m very happy with how it came out!

I love this medium, it reminds me to stay present and patient while working towards a goal. Though I am dedicated to finding my style and documenting it over time, sometimes it’s more important to just enjoy the craft.

... Read moreIt's a feeling many artists know all too well: that invisible wall, that heavy 'painter pressure' that keeps you from creating. For so long, I found myself stuck, staring at a blank canvas, paralyzed by the fear of not being original enough or not finding 'my art style.' That was certainly my experience, leading to a break that lasted for what felt like an eternity. But I'm thrilled to say, I recently completed my first oil painting in 3 years, and it's brought back so much of 'the art of joy' I thought I'd lost. That break taught me a lot about creative blocks. It wasn't just about lacking inspiration; it was about the self-imposed pressure to produce something groundbreaking every time. The quest for a unique style became an obstacle rather than a guide. I realized that the core of what I loved about art – the simple act of creation, the mixing of colors, the flow of paint – had been overshadowed by external expectations and internal perfectionism. If you've ever felt that overwhelming need for your work to be 'perfect' or 'unique,' you're not alone. It's a common trap that can slowly drain the passion out of your artistic journey. So, how did I get past it? For me, it started with letting go of the need for originality and simply embracing inspiration. I stumbled upon a beautiful image on Pinterest and decided, 'Why not just recreate it?' There was no pressure to invent, only to observe and interpret. This small shift in mindset was monumental. It allowed me to reconnect with the pure enjoyment of the craft, much like when I first started painting. The focus moved from the outcome to the process, fostering a sense of presence and patience that had been missing for years. The satisfaction wasn't in creating something new, but in the meditative act of bringing an image to life with my own hands. If you're struggling with your own creative blocks or 'painter pressure,' here are a few things I learned that might help you rediscover 'the art of joy': Embrace Copying (for practice!): Don't feel guilty about recreating something you love. It's an excellent way to learn techniques, understand composition, and get back into the flow without the pressure of inventing. Websites like Pinterest are fantastic for finding inspiration without judgment. Focus on the Process, Not Just the Product: Shift your mindset. Instead of thinking, 'I need to create a masterpiece,' think, 'I'm going to enjoy this hour of painting.' Notice the texture of the paint, the brushstrokes, the colors. This presence is where true artistic joy resides. Give Yourself Permission to Make 'Bad' Art: Not every piece has to be gallery-worthy. Some of the most valuable learning experiences come from experiments that don't quite work out. The goal is to keep creating, not to achieve perfection every time. This freedom is essential for overcoming blocks. Start Small: Don't commit to a huge, daunting project. Begin with a quick sketch, a small canvas, or even just some color mixing exercises. Small wins build momentum and confidence. Try a New Medium (or Revisit an Old Love): For me, diving back into oil painting after so long felt fresh and exciting. Sometimes a change of scenery, or a different set of tools, can spark new creativity. The slow drying time of oils, for instance, forced me to slow down and be more deliberate, which was incredibly therapeutic. Connect with Your 'Why': Why did you start creating art in the first place? Was it for self-expression, relaxation, or simply the love of beauty? Reconnecting with that initial spark can reignite your passion and help you push past the pressure. Rediscovering art after a long break, especially completing 'MY FIRST OIL PAINTING IN 3 YEARS,' has been incredibly fulfilling. It's a reminder that art should be a source of happiness, not stress. Let go of the pressure, embrace the process, and find your own path back to the joy of creation.
