I’ve been struggling to find PT to help my Occipital Neuralgia. And this is the first exercise that actually doesn’t cause me rebound pain and flare me up. So, I thought I’d share it. Plus, I love sharing ways to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system like humming! ❤️‍🩹

... Read moreIf you suffer from Occipital Neuralgia, finding effective exercises that do not worsen your pain can be challenging, especially if you have a hypermobile head and neck. One approach that physical therapists often recommend is targeting the parasympathetic nervous system to promote relaxation and reduce nerve-related pain. This particular technique involves using a small rolled towel to support the head comfortably while lying down. The exercise starts with controlled breathing: exhaling deeply while opening the throat to produce a humming sound. The vibration from humming helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which can calm the body’s stress response and alleviate muscle tension around the occipital nerves. Next, inhaling deeply into the belly while consciously closing the throat engages the internal throat muscles. This phase focuses on activating core support and stabilizing the neck without causing strain. Holding each breathing position before moving on ensures the muscles are engaged properly without abrupt movements that might trigger rebound pain. For those with hypermobility, gentle and mindful exercises like this reduce the risk of overstretching ligaments around the head and neck. Consistent practice can improve neck stability and decrease the frequency and intensity of neuralgia flare-ups. In addition to the physical benefits, these breathing and humming exercises also promote mental relaxation by shifting the nervous system from sympathetic (fight or flight) dominance to parasympathetic (rest and digest) mode. This holistic approach not only targets pain but helps improve overall well-being. If you are exploring ways to manage occipital nerve pain safely, incorporating parasympathetic stimulation techniques combined with physical therapy guidance can be a valuable part of your self-care routine. Always consult your healthcare provider before beginning new exercises to ensure they suit your individual condition and needs.

mom, a partner, a creator, and just a human being. It’s exhausting trying to pour from an empty cup, but I’ve finally realized I deserve to take care of me, too. Whether it’s 10 minutes in the hot tub, a skincare routine, or sitting in silence—I’m learning to slow down and breathe. 💗 #GirlTalk
