One symptom that can be surprisingly disruptive is persistent, excessive hiccups—sometimes so severe that they interrupt sleep. From my own experience, I found that these frequent hiccups are connected to dysfunction in the autonomic nervous system, which regulates automatic bodily functions. Specifically, the vagus nerve, a crucial part of this system, can sometimes misfire and trigger hiccups that just won't stop. One effective and unusual remedy I've discovered is swallowing peanut butter. The sticky texture requires deliberate swallowing and activates the nerves in the throat area, including the vagus nerve. This stimulation can interrupt the hiccup reflex arc and bring immediate relief. Unlike other methods like holding your breath or drinking water quickly, peanut butter offers a sensory and physical trigger that seems to reset the nerve. If you or someone you know with EDS or HSD struggles with frequent hiccups, this tip might be worth trying. Of course, it's always recommended to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out other causes and explore comprehensive management strategies. In addition to dietary adjustments, managing stress and monitoring autonomic nervous system health can also make a difference. Awareness months for EDS and HSD help highlight these less-known challenges, encouraging sharing of tips and support within the community. Simple approaches like this demonstrate how listening to your body and experimenting with small solutions can improve daily quality of life.
