There clearly needs to be more done to protect disabled people from abuse. ❤️‍🩹

3 days agoEdited to

... Read moreHaving come across this article, I want to share some personal reflections on the alarming prevalence of abuse against disabled people and why awareness and action are critical. The article outlines 10 unique forms of abuse—from refusal to help with basic daily tasks, withholding medications, denying access to healthcare, mishandling finances, to destroying mobility aids and threatening service animals—each showing how abusers exploit disabilities to exert power. From my own experiences and conversations with friends in the disabled community, the emotional toll of such abuse can be devastating, compounding physical limitations with isolation, shame, and loss of independence. Disabled women, in particular, often face intersectional vulnerabilities, with statistics showing they are 40% more likely to experience intimate partner violence than non-disabled women. One critical aspect often overlooked is how abusers manipulate disability itself to justify mistreatment or cause humiliation, making it harder for victims to seek help. This stigma needs to be dismantled through education, public policy improvements, and training for healthcare providers, law enforcement, and social services. Creating safer environments also requires accessible reporting mechanisms and specialized support networks sensitive to the needs of disabled people. For example, ensuring communication methods accommodate sensory impairments and that shelters have accessible facilities can make a huge difference. Additionally, educating disabled individuals on recognizing abuse signs specific to their situations empowers them to protect themselves and seek assistance earlier. Self-advocacy, peer support groups, and online communities serve as vital lifelines. Ultimately, building empathy and understanding in society will drive stronger protective measures. Sharing stories openly helps break the silence and fear surrounding disability-related abuse. We all have a role in offering support, raising awareness, and demanding systemic changes to safeguard the dignity and rights of disabled people everywhere. If you or someone you know is affected, reach out to specialized organizations and professionals trained to handle such sensitive cases. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and most importantly, care deeply.

Not everything needs closure. ✨️
We’re often taught to wait for closure — a conversation, an apology, an explanation — before we allow ourselves to move on. But real life isn’t always that generous. You’re allowed to continue without everything making sense. You’re allowed to choose peace even when clarity never arrives.
