Study Tips For the CPC Exam

The CPC exam is 100 questions and you have 4 hours to complete it. If your book is tabbed and highlighted, it will help you find the answers quicker and save time.

Many people do not pass the CPC exam because they run out of time. That is why I teach my students test taking techniques like this. It will help them with the exam so they can get into the real world of medical coding faster :)

My next medical coding course will start in June. Registration will be starting in April. For now you can sign up for my class wait-list and I'll email you more info shortly.

The price of the course is $2875 and includes:

⭐️Course textbook

⭐️Course workbook

⭐️ ICD-10-CM coding manual

⭐️CPT coding manual

⭐️HCPCS coding manual

⭐️AAPC membership

⭐️CPC exam voucher

⭐️CPC study guide

And supplemental materials:

⭐️Book tabs for 2 coding manuals

⭐️Medical Terminology Guide

Midnight Medical Coding is an Educational Partner with AAPC and I teach their program. The course prepares you to take the CPC exam from AAPC.

... Read morePassing the CPC exam felt like a huge mountain to climb, but with the right strategy, it's totally achievable! Beyond just knowing your stuff, it’s about smart test-taking. I want to share some additional tips that truly made a difference for me, especially since many people struggle with time and knowing how to study effectively. First, let's dive deeper into those coding manuals – they are your best friends during the exam! When the original article mentions tabbing and highlighting, it's spot on. I personally used alphabetical tabs for my CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS manuals. Don't just tab chapters; tab key sections, modifier appendices, and even the official ICD-10-CM coding guidelines themselves. Think of your open ICD-10-CM coding manual as your ultimate reference. For example, in ICD-10-CM, I had tabs for 'Infections,' 'Neoplasms,' and critical guidelines like 'Laterality.' This made finding information so much faster under pressure. I also started with handwritten notes in the margins, especially for rules that always tripped me up. I'd highlight the main point and jot down a quick reminder. This really helped solidify my knowing guidelines and turned my books into a personalized 'cheat sheet' without actually cheating! Beyond preparing your books, mastering the art of the exam itself is crucial. The 100 questions in 4 hours means you have roughly 2.4 minutes per question. That's tight! My strategy was to read the question, identify the core, then quickly scan answers. If I couldn't narrow it down to two within a minute, I'd circle it and move on. Coming back with fresh eyes often helped, plus it ensured I didn't run out of time on easier questions. Don't be afraid to skip and return! For exam preparation the night before – my best advice is not to cram! I did a very light review of my highlighted coding books and notes, focusing on confident areas to build self-assurance. More importantly, I focused on logistics: laying out my approved manuals, pencils, and calculator. I planned my route, ensured a good night's sleep, and had a light, protein-rich breakfast. Mental prep is key. Many also ask about CPC exam preparation books or study guides. While course materials are fantastic, supplementing with practice exams from various sources is incredibly beneficial. I found full-length practice exams under timed conditions were the best way to identify my weak areas. After each test, I thoroughly reviewed why the correct answer was right and why my chosen answer was wrong. This deep dive truly improved my medical coding exam preparation. Understanding the CPC exam pattern also helped. I knew roughly how many questions would be from CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, anatomy, terminology, and compliance. This allowed me to allocate study time more effectively, focusing extra effort on higher-count sections. Remember, every bit of preparation adds up. By systematically tabbing your books, making effective notes, practicing time management, and being smart about your pre-exam routine, you'll feel much more confident walking into that exam room. You've got this!
