I’m still shaking with disbelief and I need to process this with people outside my family. Thanksgiving was supposed to be the first time my sister's daughter (my niece) saw our Mom since July 4th, when Mom told my niece (who is overweight) that she was "fat" and needed to ""just stop eating.""
We all knew things were tense. But what happened at dinner was absolutely horrifying.
My niece has a severe, deathly peanut allergy—she carries an EpiPen. My Mom, who is obsessed with my niece's weight, used peanut product in almost every single dish and dessert. The only things my niece could safely eat were plain vegetables and the turkey.
When confronted, Mom actually admitted she did it deliberately, saying that if my sister wasn't going to teach her daughter how to ""eat healthy,"" she would, damn it.
It went from family drama to an act of genuine malice and danger. My sister and her husband immediately left, and our whole family—my brother, his wife, their kids, and me—left with them. We basically cleared the house.
We left the dinner table to protect a child from emotional abuse and a literal physical threat. I know we basically ruined the holiday, but I feel proud that we stood up for my niece. Was walking out too much, or was it the only acceptable response?

WOW! That is horrible! The fat shaming was bad enough, but to add peanuts, knowing the child is allergic to them, to most of the dishes, is beyond cruel and dangerous. She needs to go to therapy and get some help. You don't do things like that, to anyone, but especially a child! That is child abuse and child endangerment, in my opinion. No, you and your sister's family did not ruin Thanksgiving, she did. I hope you guys plan Christmas dinner at someone else's house and I hope you have an awesome Christmas.
