You've seen my top 10 list of unique things to do in Tohoku, but let me tell you more about why this underrated region of Japan completely stole my heart! Many travelers stick to the Golden Route, but northern Japan offers such a rich, authentic experience away from the crowds. If you're looking for fun activities in Japan that are truly off the beaten path, Tohoku is your answer. First, let's talk about getting around this beautiful area. While the original post mentions the Lapras & Chansey Train, which is super cute for Pokémon fans, the Shinkansen (bullet train) is your best friend for reaching major cities like Sendai or Fukushima. From there, local trains or even renting a car can give you the flexibility to explore places like Tsuruga Castle or the scenic Geibikei Gorge at your own pace. I found that having a car was especially helpful for reaching some of the more remote, picturesque spots and for making the most of a Fruit Picking adventure at JR Fruits Park Sendai Arahama, where I got to choose my own strawberries and pears! One of the highlights for me was definitely the cultural immersion. Staying at Watari Onsen, a traditional Japanese inn with its own hot springs, was pure bliss. It's not just about bathing; it's about the whole ryokan experience – the tatami mats, the delicious multi-course meals, and truly unwinding. Compared to more famous onsen towns, Watari felt incredibly peaceful and authentic. And the food! Beyond the unique challenge of Wankosoba at Azumaya Honten (seriously, how many bowls can you eat?), the Shiogama Fish Market was an absolute dream. Being able to create my own DIY Seafood Bowl with the freshest catches was an unforgettable experience. I also discovered some amazing local sake and delicious regional snacks that you just don't find elsewhere in Japan. Another spot that truly stood out was Takamatsu Pond. If you visit in winter, seeing over 500 swans gracefully gliding on the water is just magical. It’s a completely different vibe from the vibrant Chansey's Lucky Park, showcasing the incredible diversity of Tohoku. And exploring Matsushima Bay by ferry, one of Japan's Three Great Views, was breathtaking. The tiny, pine-covered islands are simply stunning, especially during sunset. While my trip focused on these 10 distinct places, Tohoku as a whole is full of hidden gems. Whether you're into history, nature, unique attractions like the Pokémon-themed parks, or incredible food, there's always something new to discover. For those wondering what to do in Tohoku or what to see north of Tokyo, I genuinely hope my experiences inspire you to explore this resilient and beautiful region.
