early literacy readiness checklist toddler

Reading starts long before a child sounds out a single word. These pre-reading signs, like holding a book the right way and noticing rhymes, are the real foundation. Honestly, the best thing I ever did was stop chasing letters and just nurture the love of books first. The skills follow once the joy is there.

Which sign is your little reader showing?

... Read moreFrom my experience as a parent trying to foster early literacy, I found that focusing on low-pressure, fun activities made the biggest difference. Before my toddler even recognized letters, simply encouraging them to hold books the right way and turn pages helped develop print awareness naturally. We often pointed at words and pictures while reading aloud, which supported print tracking and built their confidence. I also noticed that rhyming games and songs were key in strengthening their sound play skills. Clapping out syllables together and playing with rhymes made learning feel like a game rather than a chore. This playful engagement sparked their interest in sounds, an important step before decoding letters. Another helpful tip was to embrace repetition by reading the same favorite books again and again. This predictable structure helped my toddler memorize key phrases and anticipate what would come next, building early comprehension and verbal skills. Interestingly, even before my child could name letters, they would recognize the initial letter of their own name around the house, which ignited their curiosity about print in their environment. This curiosity was a natural motivator that I encouraged by pointing out letters on signs and posters. I also found educational posters a useful tool. A set of laminated posters featuring the alphabet, numbers, shapes, and weather not only brightened our learning space but also offered quick, engaging reference points during daily routines. These visuals helped extend learning beyond storytime. Overall, my journey reinforced that nurturing a passion for books and language through everyday interactions lays a vital foundation for literacy. Instead of rushing into formal letter recognition, focusing on joyful experiences with books and sounds prepares toddlers to become confident early readers.
