signs your toddler is ready for letters

Before you start "drilling" the alphabet, take a breath and watch for these gentle readiness signs instead. Honestly, pushing letters too early usually backfires. Curiosity always comes first, and these little signs tell you it's quietly showing up, so you can follow their lead instead of a worksheet schedule.

Is your toddler starting to notice letters yet?

7/1 Edited to

... Read moreWhen my toddler started showing interest in letters, it was a game changer for how I approached early literacy. I realized that pushing letters too soon can cause frustration instead of excitement. For example, my child began pointing at letters on signs outside and asking, "What's that?" This curiosity was the perfect opportunity to engage without pressure. I started by reading short books and encouraging my toddler to turn the pages, even if only one page at a time. This small step generated enthusiasm for print and storytelling. Also, noticing how my child scribbled with purpose, holding crayons and trying to copy lines, I understood these fine motor skills were precursors to writing letters. I didn’t insist on neatness but celebrated the effort. Recognizing their own name’s shape became a fun activity, turning letter recognition into a personal adventure. From my experience, waiting for these gentle readiness signs—like spotting letters in their name, asking lots of questions, and sitting through a story—created a natural and joyful foundation for letter learning. This approach respects each toddler’s unique pace and builds a lifelong love of reading and writing.
