The Words We Speak POWER AND PROMISE OF GOD’S WORD
One of the explicit teachings of the Bible is the importance of the words we speak. In this text God changes Abram’s name to Abraham and promises Abraham that he will become the father of many nations. “Abram” means “High Father” or “Patriarch.” “Abraham” means “Father of a Multitude.” Thus, God was arranging that every time Abraham heard or spoke his own name, he would be reminded of God’s promise.
Adam Clarke’s Commentary states it well: “God [associates] the patriarch more nearly to Himself, by thus imparting to him a portion of His own name,” noting God added this to Abraham “for the sake of dignity.”
The principle: Let God’s words, which designated His will and promise for your life, become as fixed in your mind and as governing of your speech as God’s changing Abraham’s name was in shaping his concept of himself. Do not “name” yourself anything less than God does.
Reflecting on the name change from Abram to Abraham reveals a powerful example of how divine words influence identity and destiny. This biblical account highlights the importance of aligning our self-perception with God's promises rather than limiting beliefs. In my own experience, embracing positive declarations—whether spiritual promises or affirmations—has transformed the way I approach challenges and goals. The passage from Numbers, where Joshua and Caleb report about the 'land flowing with milk and honey,' similarly underscores faith in God's provision and encouragement not to fear opposition. Practically, I have learned to incorporate this principle by speaking over my life only what aligns with God’s will and promises, avoiding self-limiting labels or doubts. Just as Abraham’s new name continually reminded him of God’s covenant, regularly meditating on and declaring uplifting truths can renew confidence and perseverance. Moreover, the biblical example encourages us to carefully consider the names or words by which we identify ourselves and others, remembering the power inherent in such declarations. Words can build faith or breed fear; therefore, it’s vital to speak life, hope, and promise into our daily lives. Ultimately, God’s words serve not only as instructions but as affirmations designed to shape our identity and destiny. By embracing God’s promises and speaking them with faith, we participate in a transformative process that impacts both personal growth and spiritual journey.
