Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.— Proverbs 4:23

Reflection: In this chapter, the speaker urges his son to do everything he can to gain wisdom and warns him of the dangers of following evil and wickedness instead of wisdom and life.

At the core of his argument is this: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Translated from Hebrew, heart means mind, conscience, center, and middle (Google Translate). Everything we do, everything we are, starts with the heart, which then crafts our thoughts, words, and actions, thereby forming our entire personhood.

Guarding your heart is a big responsibility, perhaps one of the most important you will be tasked with during your journey on earth. You might often hear this verse applied to purity, but it goes far beyond that. There’s an exhaustive list of things from which to protect ourselves: anger, evil, idolatry, dishonesty, temptation...the list goes on.

As you’re going through this difficult daily work of keeping your heart and mind away from these things, it might feel like you’re fighting against yourself, but in reality, you’re fighting for yourself...to be the pure, holy, righteous (to use a favorite word from the Proverbs) child of God you are destined to be.

You’re fighting for your integrity, your reputation, your whole identity. And you are not doing it alone. You’re doing this with God, and it’s not just for yourself, it’s also for the people around you.

On paper, it sounds so easy. In practice, it can be another story. What happens when you feel caught up in sin, powerless to do anything but continue down the same path? Or when your heart has been so worn down by your past, the behavior of others, guilt, and sin that you don’t feel like you can fight off any more attacks?

You don’t have to fix everything at once. Simply take it a step at a time, recognizing your areas of temptation. What is one thing you can do today to protect your heart? And start there.

And give yourself grace. God loves you, and He promises to forgive you when you come to Him and ask.

Prayer: Lord, I fail daily to protect myself from thoughts, images, and other objects of the world. Give me Your strength as I guard my heart. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

... Read moreReflecting on Proverbs 4:23, I've found that guarding the heart truly shapes our entire being—not just morally but emotionally and mentally as well. From my own experience, protecting my heart involves daily mindfulness about what I allow to influence my thoughts and feelings. For example, when facing anger or temptation, I remind myself that these emotions, if unchecked, can seep into my decisions and affect my relationships. One practical approach I've adopted is journaling my thoughts and feelings each day. This practice helps me identify patterns and triggers that threaten to disturb my inner peace. It’s not always easy, as guarding the heart requires constant vigilance and is often a fight for one’s integrity rather than against it. However, recognizing that this personal struggle is shared by others and supported by faith gives me strength. I also learned that guarding the heart means setting boundaries—not only with external influences but internally, such as rejecting negative self-talk or guilt stemming from past mistakes. It's important to be gentle and patient with yourself, acknowledging that growth in this area is a process, not an instant fix. Furthermore, the verse’s emphasis on the heart as the source of life’s outcomes reminds me that taking care of my heart influences every aspect of my life, including my speech, actions, and overall demeanor. By prioritizing wisdom and consciously avoiding harmful influences like dishonesty or idolatry, I’ve noticed a significant positive change in how I relate to others and how I perceive myself. Ultimately, guarding the heart is deeply connected to trusting in God’s forgiveness and grace. Whenever I falter, turning to prayer and seeking strength renews my resolve. It reminds me that I am not alone in this journey and that every effort to protect my heart contributes to becoming the whole and righteous person I am meant to be. This holistic view helps me face daily challenges with hope, courage, and faith.

The first page of A Course In Miracles Lesson 136, titled 'Sickness is a defense against the truth,' discusses how sickness serves a purpose, is a device for self-deception, and how defenses are chosen to hide reality.
This page continues Lesson 136, explaining that sickness is a decision and a plan to shield oneself from truth, making the body seem stronger than truth and God's will.
This page of Lesson 136 emphasizes that God knows not of plans to change His Will, and truth has power beyond defense. It outlines the practice for the day, including a healing prayer.
