The Last Day - Knowledge Files Episode 1
The Knowledge Files — Episode 1
Friday was David’s last day.
He had worked at Horizon Manufacturing for 31 years.
He knew which machines were temperamental during the summer. He knew which suppliers always delivered early, and which ones needed a reminder call. He knew why a process that looked inefficient on paper actually saved the company thousands of dollars every year.
None of it was written down.
At 4:58 p.m., David shook a few hands, carried a small cardboard box to his truck, and drove away.
Everyone wished him well.
Monday morning started like every other Monday.
By Tuesday, people were asking, “Does anyone know how David used to handle this?”
By Wednesday, production had slowed.
By Friday, customers were waiting longer than usual.
The company didn’t lose an employee.
It lost three decades of experience.
Buildings can be replaced.
Equipment can be replaced.
Even people can be replaced.
Knowledge is much harder.
What’s one piece of knowledge inside your organization that only one person knows?
