I want to get into running 🏃

What advice would you have for a beginner runner ? How would you recommend to control breathing and pace ?

I have wanted to get into running for a couple weeks now. I wanted to try something new and really challenge myself. I set a goal to run a 5K in November. However, I need tips, tricks and advice.

I have gone on three runs so far. My first two runs were on a treadmill. The first run was 0.8 miles and my second run was a mile. Although this was challenging I enjoyed it. This past weekend I went for my first outdoor run and only made it .45 miles, and was miserable.

I was struggling so badly, from not being able to control my pace and my breathing. When I focused on my breathing my pace speed up. When I focused on my pace, my breathing went to crap.

... Read moreStarting a running journey can be both exciting and overwhelming, especially for beginners. To ensure success and enjoyment, it’s crucial to have a structured approach. First, consider starting with a run/walk program, which may help you gradually build up your stamina without overwhelming yourself. This method is particularly effective for those new to running, as it allows for recovery while still progressing towards your goal. Next, focus on your breathing technique. Many beginners struggle with breathing rhythm while running. A popular technique is to inhale for three steps and exhale for two steps, creating a comfortable, consistent pattern. This practice helps regulate your pace and maintain sufficient oxygen flow, ensuring a more enjoyable experience. Additionally, gear plays a vital role in running comfort. Investing in a good pair of running shoes that fit well and offer proper support is essential to prevent injuries and enhance your performance. Consider visiting a specialized running store to get properly fitted. Setting achievable goals can also keep you motivated. Instead of solely aiming for a 5K, break your training into smaller milestones, such as jogging a certain distance or time and gradually increasing difficulty as you progress. This incremental approach fosters a sense of accomplishment. Lastly, incorporating cross-training activities, such as cycling or swimming, can improve your overall fitness while giving running-specific muscles a break. This varied approach not only enhances your cardiovascular endurance but also mitigates the risk of injury. Remember, the journey is as important as the destination, so enjoy every step of your running adventure!

Based on what you wrote, I would say to focus more on breathing and being in your body, than on pace—pace will come naturally with time. But if you can focus on keeping a calm breath, increasing pace will come easily and the tempo of the breath will naturally increase. 🥰 so stoked for you!!

Use the Nike Run Club App! It’s free and has programs to follow. I felt very similar and it has helped me improve so much. I used the guided runs, which have a voiceover to listen to and the coach in the voiceover will give cues on some of what you described to help you get through and be a better runner. You got this!

My best advice is to start slow and run/walk 2-3 times a week! Slowly decrease your walking amount each time and increase your running amount! I struggled getting my first 2-4 miles but I was going out way too fast so my body got too tired too early. It’s also good to establish goals. Do you want t
