TEXAS -♦️What Is the Athena Alert?
The Athena Alert is a Texas law that created a new type of local missing child alert. It can be activated the moment a child is reported missing, reaching the community most likely to help within a 100-mile radius of where the child was last seen.
The AMBER Alert is a vital and respected system that has saved countless lives. However, it requires confirmation that a child has been abducted before it can be issued. When Athena went missing, law enforcement could not yet confirm an abduction had taken place, which meant an AMBER Alert could not be sent. That gap in the system is what the Athena Alert was created to fill.
** The Athena Alert does not replace the AMBER Alert. It works alongside it, giving local communities an additional tool to act quickly in those critical early hours when a child first goes missing.
Texas legislators recognized the need and acted. The Athena Alert became part of Texas law, a direct result of Maitlyn's courage and the love of a community that refused to let Athena's story end in silence.
