How I differentiated binging from overeating

2025/1/24 Edited to

... Read moreUnderstanding the difference between an occasional overindulgence, genuine extreme hunger, and binge eating can feel like navigating a maze. For years, I found myself dismissing my patterns, telling myself it was just a lack of willpower or that I was simply hungrier than others. But the truth was, my body and mind were sending me very clear signals that what I was experiencing was a Binge Eating Disorder, not just over eating. One of the biggest eye-openers for me was realizing that my eating wasn't about physical hunger. I remember having "no bills" but somehow always being broke because I was spending all on food. This wasn't about sustenance; it was about an urgent, uncontrollable urge driven by emotions, not an empty stomach. The "food noise" in my head was constant, a relentless internal chatter that overshadowed any logical thought. This distinguishes it significantly from extreme hunger, which often arises after periods of restriction or genuine physical exertion. Extreme hunger feels like your body needing fuel, whereas binging often feels like an emotional void you're desperately trying to fill, even when you know it will bring distress. The secrecy and shame that accompanied my eating habits were another huge indicator. I’d find myself driving through different drive-throughs in the middle of the night, car eating alone, desperate to hide my actions. I wasn’t going with my friends to do things because I was constantly preoccupied with food, or the fear that if there was food present, I wouldn't be able to control myself. This self isolation was a huge red flag. I always ate in my room, um, always alone, because I was terrified of judgment from anybody. This intense secrecy and the efforts to hide my eating separated it profoundly from eating a large meal with family or friends, even if it was a bit too much. My body also started giving me very clear signs that it did not enjoy this pattern. I developed severe indigestion and persistent IBS symptoms. The extreme weight gain was undeniable, and I could literally feel my skin stretching. These weren't just minor discomforts; they were chronic issues that significantly impacted my quality of life. My body was screaming for help, yet the cycle continued, fuelled by guilt and the belief that I was alone in this struggle. If you're reading this and recognizing these signs, please know that you're not alone. Differentiating binging from overeating or extreme hunger is the courageous first step towards healing. It’s not about willpower; it’s a complex condition that deserves understanding and support. Once I acknowledged that this was more than just a bad habit, I could begin to seek the right resources and start my journey towards recovery. Remember, gentle curiosity and self-compassion are powerful tools in figuring out what your body and mind truly need, beyond the deceptive pull of a binge.

The title slide for a post about stopping overeating, stating, "I COULDN'T STOP Eating... UNTIL I LEARNED THIS." It highlights how to stop eating out of emotion, not hunger, with a call to "SWIPE TO LEARN MORE." The background shows a desk with a plant and an open book.
This slide explains that overeating is often the brain seeking comfort, escape, stimulation, or control, not hunger. It emphasizes identifying the 'why' behind eating and notes that external cues can trigger eating without hunger. The title is "What Overeating Really is."
Titled "Emotional Eating Triggers," this slide lists signs like eating when bored/sad/anxious, feeling guilty, lacking physical hunger, and continuing to eat when full. It explains emotional eating as a learned coping mechanism, not a willpower failure, driven by emotional triggers.
