I hope ya’ll read this post & call BS!
Sadly, all of these workouts also fall under SUPER common knowledge in the fitness industry, and unless a fitness influencer has an accredited certification or degree in the field, they probably post shit like this.
Which to be fair, they probably don’t know.
The toxic diet culture that falls under health and fitness is EVERYWHERE.
And it’s making billions sharing these myths through unsuspecting influencers making posts and selling programs.
But let’s be clear, these are FALSE.
How does this start?
When I talk to clients about their goals and who areas they want to target, people tend to point at what they want to fix.
Sometimes we point to glutes, sometimes we point to arms, or stomach…sometimes we point to hip dips, ‘bat wings’, or fupas.
But the difference between a tricep or glute muscle and a fupa is essentially ‘what it’s made of.’
🔋Muscle can be broken down and repaired, making us stronger, growing the muscle, and effectively giving us ‘toned’/lean/bulk results.
🚩Fat on the other hand cannot BE TARGETED OR SPOT REDUCED. This I can’t stress enough. This is science. This isn’t a matter of option or something you get with a ‘really good workout.’ It’s time to call BS on influencers who say otherwise.
Here’s why:
🔋1. Fat Metabolism: Lipolysis, the process of breaking down stored fat into fatty acids, occurs systemically, NOT locally. When you exercise, adipose tissue from various regions contributes to energy expenditure, not just the muscle groups being worked.
🔋2. Genetics: Your genetic profile dictates your body’s fat distribution and lipolytic activity. This means adipocyte (fat cell) response to caloric deficit varies, influencing where fat is lost first or last. (Everyone’s fat storage is different.)
🔋3. Evidence: Multiple studies using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and MRI have demonstrated that localized exercises do not enhance regional fat loss. Effective fat reduction requires systemic caloric expenditure, not isolated muscle engagement. (We’ve tested, and proven these claims.)
So how DO you address your goals?
Instead, if you want to get rid of body fat, you’re going to do it through generalized loss. You want your stomach to shrink? Loose overall body fat%. Focus on caloric deficit, health, burning calories and lifting, (and hoping your genetics help you out as well,) the fat storage being held in your abdominal will noticeably change first.
Focus on building muscle in your lifts and focus on the exercise at hand.
If you do post about this, and are just finding out-it’s okay! Diet industry is smart, they want to make billions, and have become good at tricking us. Even I believed myths like this once, but now you know, do better. Knowledge is power, and we can do better for this industry.

In the realm of fitness, misconceptions abound, especially regarding fat loss. A common belief is that one can target specific body areas for fat reduction, such as hips or arms. However, science demonstrates that spot reduction is a myth. Fat metabolism, or lipolysis, operates systemically, meaning that fat breakdown occurs throughout the body rather than in isolated regions. Genetics play a significant role in how and where we store fat, influencing individual responses to weight loss efforts. Effective fat loss requires a holistic approach, focusing on creating a caloric deficit and overall body strength rather than solely targeting desired areas through specific exercises. Engaging in strength training, combined with a balanced diet, is essential for achieving your fitness goals. It promotes muscle growth, boosts metabolism, and leads to overall body transformation. Empower yourself with accurate information about fitness and fat loss! Understanding how fat loss works can help dispel harmful myths propagated by unqualified influencers. By focusing on sustainable practices, like healthy eating habits and regular exercise, you can achieve lasting results that enhance both health and self-confidence.

I love how this approach is like tough love. 👏 ❤️
