Live and learn right?

I like to call these character building moments for myself.

This is also a very short list of many many "mistakes" and learning moments. Most of these were incredibly humbling where you kind of have to just laugh. Or alternate between crying and laughing hahah

Van life sure has a way of keeping the highs in check. One moment you're stoked on a scenic camping spot you found with NO ONE there that you off roaded for 45 min to get to - the next you're hunkered down inside because of a wind storm at said scenic camping spot haha.

And ask how I know you should NEVER run out of fuel in a diesel vehicle • (that was actually my ex's fault, but it cost ME over 6k)

..l'm glad none of these were very serious or put me in an actual dangerous situation. I've been fairly lucky that way (I think having anxiety and listening to my gut also has prevented a lot of little things that could have been serious

have you experienced any of these? I feel like a lot of these are quintessential road life experiences.

Which one would be the hardest to deal with?

#vanliving #roadlife #dirtbaglife

... Read moreLiving the van life has been one big adventure filled with unpredictable moments and plenty of lessons learned the hard way. One mistake I found especially humbling was running out of fuel in a diesel van, which ended up costing over $6,000 in repairs. It’s a mistake I would never want to repeat and definitely one that many vanlifers should avoid by keeping a close eye on fuel levels and planning ahead for remote trips. Another key lesson comes from practical things like testing your spare tire kit before hitting the road. Having had a near-miss when my spare wasn’t fully ready, I now always double-check every piece of gear. It’s surprising how small oversights can turn into big problems when you’re miles away from any help. I also learned about the importance of vehicle design, especially realizing how vital it is to have a van you can stand up in comfortably. At first, I underestimated this and it made living inside much less pleasant than I imagined. These design elements are crucial because van life is living full-time in a tiny space, so comfort and practicality matter a lot. Then there’s the challenge of privacy and safety—like discovering that my van windows weren’t tinted enough, which made changing clothes in busy parking lots quite stressful. Improving window tint or planning stops carefully can help you avoid those awkward moments. On the practical side, I made mistakes with food storage, learning that airtight containers keep insects and pests away. The same goes for managing waste properly; an overflowing pee jug taught me to be more organized and hygienic to avoid unpleasant situations. Weather unpredictability also keeps you humble. One moment, you’re thrilled to find a completely secluded spot after a long off-road drive, and the next, you’re stuck inside as a windstorm rages outside. Preparing for sudden weather changes is key to staying safe and comfortable. Van life teaches resilience and the value of patience. Despite these missteps, the highs of the road, beautiful views, and the freedom to explore far outweigh the challenges. As someone with anxiety, listening to my gut has definitely saved me from potentially dangerous situations. I would say these quintessential road life experiences unite the community, as many have faced similar trials. Which of these challenges do you think would be the hardest to handle? Sharing experiences helps us all grow and better prepare for the next adventure.
