Oman was interesting. Have you heard of Oman? If so, what have you heard about it?

In today’s post you’ll hear my personal experiences there, facts about Oman, and what to do and know before you go there!

Chapter 1 ——— THE TAXI DRAMAS 😶‍🌫️⚔️

I saw many good things about the Omani people on the internet. Alas, my first encounter with an Omani was a bad one. A taxi driver at the airport tried to rip me the fuck off by telling me it would cost 7 OMR (23.36 SGD) to get to my hotel. I told him I wanted to try taking the bus, he was the bus cost the same amount.

It didn’t cost the same amount yall 😂 HE EFFING LIED GADDAMMIT TAXI DRIVERS AT THE AIRPORT ARE THE WORST AND ALL THE SAME 😭

Anyways.

In the end, it cost me 3 OMR to get my place. 2 rial for bus, 1 rial for a taxi from the bus stop to my place. Would’ve been 4 had I not shared the cost for the taxi with a girl I met at the airport bus stop. She just so happened to stay at the same place as me 🙏

Would’ve been 3.5 had the taxi driver not decided midway the 5 min ride was 2 rial, not 1 like we agreed upon before starting the journey.

Where is the hospitality, the honesty, the friendliness the internet promised oml 😭

ATP, I felt like for my first day in this country I was getting too bloody annoyed. But I gave it a chance.

And it just really disappointed………

There are 2 other terrible experiences I have to share about Oman. One happened to a friend, the other happened to me.

The friend’s story was a series of misfortunes. From her Airbnb catching fire in the middle of the night (day 1) to finding out the new hotel she booked had already closed down (day 2) to the frustrating back and forth with a rental car company that couldn’t seem to find her booking…. (Day 3)

yo. I can’t even with her story AHAHAH THATS CRAZY STUFF MAN THREE BAD NIGHT IN A ROW!!! ON YOUR FIRST THREE NIGHTS HERE SOMEMORE 😭

Then on my end, I had a guided tour experience with a 4.9 ⭐️ rated tour (500+ reviews) who barely spoke a word while bringing us around his countries beautiful ancient buildings. My goodness. The entire group agreed that it felt like he was a little too quiet….

okay enough with the gloom and drama.

SOME FUN FACTS ABOUT OMAN!!! 🇴🇲

Fact 1:

Oman is the oldest independent state in the Arab world 🗺️

Fact 2:

Oman shows some of the EARLIEST history of human civilisation, with discoveries of stone tools in the area that date back over 100,000 years‼️🤯

Fact 3:

It is one of the SAFEST countries in the world 👑

Fact 4:

It has FIVE out of SEVEN species of sea turtles found in the world!! 🐢

If you were to ask me whether or not, I will return to Oman, I would say no.

Yes, the famous Daymaniyat islands had beautiful clear waters and you’re practically guaranteed a chance at seeing turtles.

Yes, it’s safe, and yes there’s a lot of history.

Yes, I felt safe there.

HOWEVER ‼️

The public transport infrastructure is underwhelming, and in my experience as a female Asian traveller the people are not as friendly as advertised online (I believe white privilege played a part in my experience. Male privilege too). I cannot emphasise how extremely inconvenient it is to get around without a car as attractions are VERY far apart (simple ones like museums, famous buildings are all 30+ minute drive from each other) and the roads are not walkable (so many paths that end randomly and continue on the other side of the busy road…..).

The ONLY reason it was bearable despite the shocking lack of walkability and friendliness and accessibility was because of the people I met at my hostel and on my tours 🥺

They were really cute and friendly people who were very open to sharing their experiences and stories. It’s great to hear stories from well travelled individuals who are happy and passionate in life.

Best part was, they were having a great time here! One guy was a hitchhiker who told me he had friends and roofs all over Oman, and many told me people kept asking if she needed a ride cuz walking on the streets makes you pitiful to the locals I guess 😂 me and new my friends even made it onto ‘local news’ by walking.

Local news meaning someone spotted us and texted the hostel owner to ask if we were his guests. Cuz apparently locals don’t walk much in these areas!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
