That's when I first truly marvelled at a double rainbow. It made me stop and wonder, 'Hey, what is a double rainbow exactly, and what causes a double rainbow to appear?'
It turns out, a double rainbow is a truly special natural phenomenon, and it’s a bit different from the single arc we usually see. You might have seen images of a beautiful single rainbow arches over a house situated on a hill, set against a dramatic dark, cloudy sky, perhaps with dry, golden grass and dense, leafless bushes in the foreground, like the one I saw once. But a double rainbow adds another layer of magic!
The primary rainbow, the brighter one, is formed when sunlight enters a raindrop, reflects once off the back of the drop, and then exits, bending as it goes. This process separates the white light into its constituent colors. The red light is on the outside of the arc, and violet is on the inside.
Now, for the really cool part: the secondary or double rainbow explanation! This second, fainter arc appears when sunlight reflects twice inside the raindrop before exiting. Because of this extra reflection, the colors in the secondary rainbow are reversed compared to the primary one. So, in the outer arc, you'll see violet on the outside and red on the inside – like a mirror image! This is what makes a double rainbow so unique. It’s essentially a second, fainter bow positioned outside the first one.
You might notice the sky between the two bows often appears darker than the sky outside the bows. This area is called 'Alexander's dark band,' and it's another characteristic sign of a double rainbow. It’s all part of the fascinating optics at play that causes double rainbows. To catch a glimpse of this magnificent display, you need specific conditions: sunlight shining on raindrops, and you need to be positioned with your back to the sun. The more intense the sunshine and the larger the raindrops, the more vivid the rainbow will be.
