When Both Parents Are Sick 😷

Toddler just got over a virus… and now my husband and I both have it. And I mean bad—can’t-get-out-of-bed, full-on misery bad.

A dear friend came over this morning to entertain our toddler, which was a lifesaver. But MIL had planned to come by this afternoon, and as soon as she found out we were sick, she canceled, saying she “had something else to do.”

No other grandparents nearby. No siblings. Just us, bedridden and trying not to lose it.

I’m so exhausted and overwhelmed I just want to cry. How do parents do this when both of you are down at the same time? Any survival tips for keeping a toddler alive while completely wiped out?

... Read moreWhen both parents are sick at the same time, the challenge of caring for a toddler can feel overwhelming, especially when no other family members are nearby to help. Many parents face similar struggles and find creative ways to manage. First, prioritize rest whenever you can. Even short naps while your toddler is occupied can help replenish your energy. Use simple, quiet activities like board books, puzzles, or favorite TV shows to keep your little one entertained safely. Setting up a designated play area where your toddler can be within your sight but doesn’t require constant engagement can buy you essential downtime. Prepare easy-to-access snacks and meals in advance on healthier days or ask friends and neighbors for food drop-offs—even something as simple as fruit or crackers can make a difference. Having these ready helps reduce stress and conserves energy for key caretaking moments. Don’t hesitate to reach out online to parenting communities or local support groups for empathetic advice, virtual babysitting support, or even errands help. Sharing your experience can build a network of support that extends beyond immediate family. Most importantly, remember it’s okay to lower expectations during sickness. Your goal is survival, not perfection. Focus on meeting your toddler’s basic needs: food, safety, warmth, and comfort. Little moments of cuddling can be soothing both for you and your child. The phrase seen in the image, “what happens when the parents are sick,” echoes a very real question for many families: how do we manage when the caregivers fall ill? It’s understandable to feel exhausted and overwhelmed, but with small adjustments and community support, you can navigate this difficult phase. Keep open communication with your partner to share duties as much as possible, and celebrate small wins to maintain morale. This approach can help maintain a semblance of routine until you all recover.

It really depends on the child’s age but the best thing to do is have a game plan about what you’ll take on with kiddo and what he will take on with kiddo.
