"In the Grey Afternoon" Episode 5: Border
This work is a complete fiction (creative story). It has nothing to do with real people, groups, or events. Although it is based on the socially and ethically problematic act of adultery, it is not a recommendation or affirmation, but a literary depiction of human inner conflict.
Would you like to go to the hotel?
His words changed the air.
Cafe in front of the station. Usual seats. But I thought something was different today.
Answer, "Let me think."
of course, i can't.
But I had already given an answer. I tried to find a reason to refuse and couldn't find it.
Three days later we met again.
"I've decided," I said.
He said nothing and nodded.
A business hotel a little away from the station. A place where you don't have to worry about meeting people you know.
Silence in the elevator. Staring at the numbers going up. Hearing the sound of the heart.
Enter the room. Clean, inorganic space.
The city seen from the window. The place where I always shop can be seen far away.
He hugs her from behind.
"Are you scared?"
"A little"
Me too
Being kissed. First time with someone other than my husband.
Take off your clothes. Overlap your body.
It's different from that with my husband. I can't put into words what's different. But it's certainly different.
After finishing, look at yourself in the mirror.
Shining, flushed cheeks, moist eyes.
This is me, me as a woman.
"Beautiful," he says.
For the first time in a long time, I feel that way.
Take a shower. Hot water flows through the body. I wish sin would flow with me. But guilt is smaller than I thought.
Get dressed and do your hair. Work to return to your usual self.
"Will I see you again?" he asked.
Answer "yes."
Leaving the hotel. 3pm. It's still bright.
On the way to the station, I passed an elementary school. My daughter's school.
It's too early to leave school. I can hear the voices of children from the schoolyard.
My legs stop.
What did I just do?
The children's mother is in a hotel with a strange man.
I feel nauseous.
I sit down on the bench. My hands tremble.
My phone rings. It's from school.
Hello.
"Mom and daughter are in the nurse's office. They seem to have a slight fever."
The blood draws attention.
i'll be right there.
Run. To school. I'm out of breath. But run.
Arrive at the infirmary. My daughter is lying down. Her face is red.
"Mom," my daughter says.
"It's okay. Mom's here."
Hug. Small body. Hot.
"I'm sorry. I'm sorry." I apologize many times in my heart.
Take him home, put him on the bed, prepare an ice pillow and put it on his forehead.
"Mom, stay with me forever."
"I'm here. Always."
Hold hands. Little, warm hands.
I betrayed this hand.
My daughter sleeps. I look at her sleeping face.
I'm tearing up. I can't stop.
My phone rings. It's from him.
"Thank you very much for today. See you soon."
Not replying. I can't.
While taking care of my daughter at night, I think.
What did I want to do? Freedom? Excitement? Or just running away?
But it's too late. We've crossed the line.
My husband calls me.
"How was today?"
My daughter has a fever.
"I see. It's tough."
A calm voice. He doesn't seem worried.
Yeah.
Hang up the phone.
If my husband had seen me more, if he had listened to me more.
But that's an excuse. What I chose.
I put my hand on my daughter's forehead. The fever is going down a little.
"I'm glad you're here," my daughter says in her sleep.
It almost breaks my heart.
I wonder if I can't go back anymore.
