On set tool kits?
No because …. I need to know #film #tv #production #ibs
For those of us working in TV, Film, and Media, especially in the fast-paced world of reality TV, having a well-stocked on-set tool kit isn't just a convenience – it's an absolute necessity. Things can go wrong in a blink, and being prepared can save the day (and your sanity!). After many hours on set, I've curated a list of my go-to essentials that I simply can't live without. This question, "What's in an on-set tool kit?", is one I get asked a lot, so here’s my personal rundown. First off, let’s talk about the Fix-It Kit. This is your basic survival gear for any unexpected issues. A good quality multi-tool (like a Leatherman) is at the top of my list. From tightening loose screws to opening stubborn packaging, its versatility is unmatched. Next up is gaffer tape – and lots of it! Black, white, grey, even some colored rolls for marking. It’s perfect for securing cables, marking positions, silencing noisy props, or even a quick wardrobe repair. Don't forget zip ties and a small pair of cutters; they’re invaluable for cable management and securing things in a pinch. A sturdy pair of scissors or a box cutter makes opening all those gear boxes a breeze, and Sharpies along with a few pens are crucial for labeling, notes, and spontaneous signage. Lastly, a small, flexible measuring tape is surprisingly useful for set dressing adjustments or checking camera distances. Then there’s the Tech Support section of my kit. In modern reality TV, we're constantly relying on tech. A powerful portable power bank and an assortment of charging cables for various devices (phones, wireless mics, small monitors) are non-negotiable. There's nothing worse than a dead device when you need it most. A compact headlamp or a small flashlight is a lifesaver for dark locations, night shoots, or digging around in a dimly lit gear truck. I also swear by a label maker; keeping cables and cases organized prevents so much headache down the line. And for those quick touch-ups on screens or lenses, a few lens wipes and a small air blower are always in my bag. Finally, for Personal Comfort & Safety, because if you're not at your best, neither is your work. A small, basic first-aid kit for minor cuts, blisters, or headaches is essential. You'll thank yourself for it. A pair of durable work gloves or nitrile gloves can protect your hands from grime, splinters, or just plain dirt. Staying hydrated and fueled is key on long shoots, so a reusable water bottle and some non-perishable snacks are always packed. And please, invest in comfortable shoes! You'll be on your feet for hours, and good footwear makes all the difference. Bonus items include a small notebook and pen for jotting down continuity notes or brilliant ideas, hand sanitizer for quick clean-ups, and a few plastic trash bags for unexpected messes or protecting gear from rain. Building your ideal on-set tool kit is a personal journey, and it evolves with each project. This is what currently works for me in the realm of reality TV production. What are some of your indispensable on-set tools? I'd love to hear your recommendations!
