All joking aside. Reading is very subjective and yes, we need honest feedback and reviews on books.
But one reader's trash could be another's treasure. The classics are not better than romance. Fantasy is written just as well written as literary fiction.
Read what you want, read it proudly and read a lot!
... Read moreOkay, so we all have those books, right? The ones that make you wonder if you accidentally picked up a doorstop instead of a novel. My recent 'never again' list, as you might've seen, included some real curveballs like an owner's manual and a federal income tax guide! 😂 Seriously, while they might be "useful," trying to find a compelling plot or engaging characters in them is a lost cause. The info dumping was real, and let's just say the world-building was strictly utilitarian. Gave them both a solid 'Zero Stars' for entertainment value, much like my satirical take on the Holy Bible – purely for laughs, of course, because let’s be real, its themes are a bit dense for a casual Sunday afternoon read!
But beyond the laughs, thinking about books I'd 'never read again' actually got me thinking about why we read in the first place. For me, it's about connection, escape, and sometimes, a good cry or a hearty laugh. When a book doesn't deliver on that, it's totally okay to put it down. And it's even more okay to admit you didn't enjoy it, no matter how much hype it got or how many people swear it's a 'classic'.
I used to feel guilty about not finishing books, or about preferring a fun romance novel to a critically acclaimed literary fiction piece. But as my original post said, reading is so subjective! One person's literary masterpiece might be another's snooze-fest. There's no universal 'best' book, and there shouldn't be any pressure to conform to what others are reading.
So, how do we avoid those 'never again' moments? Here are a few things I've learned on my reading journey:
Read the first chapter: Seriously, give it a real shot. If you're not hooked, or the writing style just isn't gelling with you, it might be a sign.
Don't be afraid of DNF (Did Not Finish): Life's too short for books you're not enjoying! It's freed up so much of my reading time.
Explore different genres: You might surprise yourself! I used to stick to fantasy, but now I dabble in everything from cozy mysteries to historical fiction.
Check out diverse reviews (but don't let them dictate): See what a few different people are saying, especially those whose tastes you generally align with. But remember, your opinion is the only one that truly matters for your reading experience.
Listen to your mood: Sometimes you need something light and fluffy, other times you crave something deep and thought-provoking. Pick a book that matches your current vibe.
Ultimately, the goal is to make reading a joyful, enriching part of your life, not a chore. So, whether it’s a gripping thriller, a heartwarming romance, or even just a particularly well-written recipe book (hey, no judgment!), read what you want, read it proudly, and read a lot! Who knows, you might even find a new favorite – or at least avoid another 'Zero Stars' experience! Happy reading, bookworms! 📚❤️
