Badlands National Park | SD

I didn’t know much about Badlands National Park before we went on this trip, but it is a really neat place. We drove through the area and stopped at a couple of lookouts and did a couple of short hikes that were right off the road. This was a great way to break up our travel home! We also visited Wall Drug Store which was nearby and there were a lot of neat vendors here! This was a fun last big stop for our summer roadtrip!

... Read moreWhen I first planned our cross-country trip, I honestly didn't know much about Badlands National Park, but wow, it turned out to be one of the most stunning surprises of our entire journey! Seeing that 'Entering Badlands National Park' sign was just the beginning of an incredible experience. The landscape here is truly unlike anywhere else I've been. It’s often described as a 'dramatic landscape,' and that's an understatement. The eroded hills and valleys create a surreal, almost moon-like terrain that changes color with the light, from pale yellows at places like Yellowmounds Overlook to richer browns and reds. It feels like Mother Nature's masterpiece, constantly shifting and revealing new textures and patterns. We chose to drive the scenic loop, which I highly recommend if you're looking to take in the views without committing to long hikes. There are so many pull-offs and designated lookouts, each offering a unique perspective of the vast South Dakota Badlands landscape. From Pinnacle Overlook, you get an expansive view of the rugged formations and deep canyons – it’s a breathtaking sight that truly shows the raw power of nature. It’s easy to spend an hour or two just stopping at these points, absorbing the sheer scale and intricate details of the geology. Even the short hikes we did right off the road were incredibly rewarding, letting us get up close to the cracked earth and unique plant life, like the vibrant yellow wildflowers I spotted near Dillon Pass. Getting out of the car, even for just a few minutes, allowed me to truly connect with the environment and appreciate its unique beauty. It truly felt like stepping onto another planet, offering a perfect blend of awe and tranquility. Beyond the breathtaking natural beauty, our visit was perfectly complemented by a stop at the iconic Wall Drug Store. Located just a short drive from Badlands National Park, it's a legendary roadside attraction that offers a fantastic break from the vastness of the park. I was amazed by the sheer number of unique shops and vendors there, from quirky souvenirs and delicious homemade donuts to free ice water – a welcome refreshment on a warm summer day! It’s not just a store but an experience in itself – a quirky piece of Americana that perfectly capped off our adventure. Wall Drug Store is more than just a place to grab a bite; it’s a cultural landmark that adds a fun, historic layer to any Badlands visit. It was such a fun last big stop for our summer road trip, providing a different kind of memory after the raw natural beauty of the park. If you're exploring South Dakota, don't miss either of these gems; they truly make for an unforgettable experience!
