Fort-De-France | Martinique

This was the 3rd stop on our cruise and it is a French territory in the Caribbean. The primary language here is French so it can be intimidating to explore the port, but it was actually pretty easy. Right off the boat there is the Pointe Simon cruise village with several local vendors. If you walk past the village to the McDonald’s, you can go and explore the city. We then went to the St. Louis Cathedral and the Bibliothèque Schœlcher. We then circled around to La Savane Park where we saw an iguana, and this brings you back to the historic Fort Saint-Louis [visites guidées]. There is a small beach and cool artwork on the walk back to the port from the fort. If you want beach time, I would recommend an excursion but we were able to safely navigate the local buildings on our own!

... Read moreExploring Fort-de-France, Martinique, as a cruise passenger is a truly unique experience, blending French charm with Caribbean vibrancy. As someone who's navigated its streets, I can tell you it's much easier than you might initially think, even with French being the primary language. The moment you step off your ship at the Pointe Simon Cruise Village, you're greeted with a buzzing atmosphere. Instead of just walking past the local vendors, take a moment to browse their crafts—you might find some authentic souvenirs or delicious local treats. The clear turquoise waters of the harbor are a beautiful welcome! One of the first things that struck me was the city's unique skyline, a mix of historic and modern architecture, framed by lush green hills. Walking from the port, you'll quickly find yourself immersed in the city's daily life. A highlight for many, and definitely for me, is La Savane Park. It's more than just a green space; it's the city's central hub, perfect for people-watching. Beyond spotting an iguana, you'll find monuments like the statue of Empress Josephine, which tells a fascinating piece of Martinique's history. It’s a great spot to pause, enjoy the tropical surroundings, and soak in the local vibe before continuing your adventure. From La Savane Park, the iconic St. Louis Cathedral is just a short walk away. Its grand facade and distinctive spire are truly impressive, standing out among the surrounding buildings. Inside, the intricate ironwork and serene atmosphere are well worth experiencing. Nearby, the Bibliothèque Schœlcher is another architectural marvel. Its ornate, colorful exterior is Instagram-worthy, and its history as a pre-fabricated building shipped from Paris to Fort-de-France is quite a story. Don't forget to look for the modern building reflecting the cathedral's spire and blue sky in its windows, a cool contrast seen in the area. Continuing your exploration will lead you past various colorful buildings that give Fort-de-France its distinct character. The street scenes, including the sight of a McDonald's near a church spire, showcase the blend of cultures. Eventually, you'll reach Fort Saint-Louis. While the article mentions it, I’d add that seeing the ancient stone walls and the large grey wooden gate with its drawbridge really transports you back in time. The fort offers fantastic views of the waterfront and the port, giving you a wonderful perspective on the harbor cityscape you arrived in. On the walk back to the port, parallel to the waterfront, keep an eye out for the vibrant pelican mural painted on a concrete pier. It's one of those unexpected artistic touches that make exploring so rewarding. If you're looking for practical tips, don't be afraid of the language barrier; a simple 'Bonjour' and 'Merci' go a long way, and many locals in tourist areas speak English. For those seeking a beach experience, an excursion is indeed a good idea, as the immediate port area is more about city exploration. However, the sheer ease of walking and discovering so many significant landmarks on your own makes Fort-de-France an incredibly rewarding stop for any Caribbean cruise.

The image features the title 'Mavi: The Pre-Columbian Bark Drink That Survived Colonialism & Got Carbonated by PepsiCo' in blue text over a background of golden, bubbly liquid, resembling a carbonated drink. It also mentions 'The full deep dive essay is now on Lemon8 @raices_roots'.
The image defines Mavi as a fermented bark beverage from Colubrina elliptica, native to the Caribbean. It states that the Taíno & Kalinago peoples brewed bark infusions for hydration, medicine, and ceremony, with text overlaid on a bubbly, golden liquid background.
The image explains Mavi's origins: Indigenous plant knowledge, African fermentation tradition, and colonial spices adopted by Caribbean people. It emphasizes that these three contributions are inseparable for understanding Mavi, set against a bubbly, golden liquid background.
