Martinique is beautiful

... Read moreWow, Martinique absolutely stole my heart! If you're looking for an incredible Caribbean escape, this island needs to be on your list. I just returned from an unforgettable trip, and I can't wait to share all the amazing places to visit in Martinique that made my experience so special. From the moment I stepped off the plane, the lush landscapes and vibrant culture captivated me. My first stop was exploring Fort-de-France, the capital. The bustling streets and beautiful architectural details were a feast for the eyes. I particularly loved wandering through the Grand Marché (market), just like the scene I saw in a photo — it's so lively! You can find everything from exotic spices and fresh produce to unique crafts and local rum. It’s definitely one of the top places in Martinique for an authentic local experience. No trip to Martinique is complete without hitting the beaches, and trust me, they are breathtaking. Anse Salines, with its powdery white sand and coconut trees, felt like a postcard come to life. The tropical foliage surrounding these beaches is just stunning, offering perfect shade for a relaxing afternoon. For a different vibe, I also visited Anse d'Arlet, a charming fishing village where I enjoyed fresh seafood by the water's edge. For a dose of history and spirituality, I highly recommend visiting the Balata Church. Its impressive architecture and serene interior left a lasting impression. Nearby, the Balata Garden is a botanical paradise with incredible views and an amazing treetop walk – it’s certainly one of the unique places to visit Martinique offers. I also made sure to see the Diamond Rock, a historical landmark jutting out of the sea, which you can admire from various viewpoints along the coast. For those who love adventure, hiking Mount Pelée, the dormant volcano, offers challenging trails and panoramic views of the entire island. And if you're into rum, a visit to one of Martinique's renowned rum distilleries, like Habitation Clément, is a must. You can learn about the history of rum-making and, of course, enjoy a tasting. I even spotted a cruise ship docked in the harbor, emphasizing Martinique's appeal as a diverse destination. Getting around the island is easiest with a rental car, allowing you to explore at your own pace and discover those hidden gems. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from December to May. The local cuisine is also a highlight – don't leave without trying accras (cod fritters) and a refreshing Ti' Punch. Martinique truly has something for everyone, whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or cultural immersion. I can’t wait to go back and discover even more places in Martinique!

The image features the title 'Mavi: The Pre-Columbian Bark Drink That Survived Colonialism & Got Carbonated by PepsiCo' in blue text over a background of golden, bubbly liquid, resembling a carbonated drink. It also mentions 'The full deep dive essay is now on Lemon8 @raices_roots'.
The image defines Mavi as a fermented bark beverage from Colubrina elliptica, native to the Caribbean. It states that the Taíno & Kalinago peoples brewed bark infusions for hydration, medicine, and ceremony, with text overlaid on a bubbly, golden liquid background.
The image explains Mavi's origins: Indigenous plant knowledge, African fermentation tradition, and colonial spices adopted by Caribbean people. It emphasizes that these three contributions are inseparable for understanding Mavi, set against a bubbly, golden liquid background.

This was the 3rd stop on our cruise and it is a French territory in the Caribbean. The primary language here is French so it can be intimidating to explore the port, but it was actually pretty easy. Right off the boat there is the Pointe Simon cruise village with several local vendors. If you walk

The cruise port is right in the town. You can get a water taxi across to the beaches if you wanted to or take a wander around, maybe both! There are markets sellers, a church, library, school, park, bars and cafes and a square to take a look at. Some really nice architecture and some modern areas
