How to dine out with toddlers

Here are my honest tips so far that I’ve learned about eating at a restaurant with toddlers

⭐️ find a family friendly restaurant

⭐️ choose to sit outside for patio seating

⭐️ Bring a tablet if you don’t care about screen time

⭐️ bring your own activity book like a coloring book or their favorite toys

Here is one of my favorite family-friendly restaurants in Chesterfield, Virginia

King's Korner Catering and Restaurant

📍7511 Airfield Dr, North Chesterfield, VA 23237

👍Pros:

All you can eat buffet

Kids can sit and watch the airplanes outside on the patio

Offers outdoor games for kids to play with

... Read moreDining out with toddlers can feel like a high-stakes mission, am I right? I’ve been there, feeling those "constant stares" and trying to prevent a "meltdown on the floor." It's easy to feel "embarrassed when your kids are screaming," but I’ve learned a few extra tricks beyond the basics to help achieve some "peace" during restaurant visits. Beyond the Basics: Pre-Restaurant Prep for Success Before you even leave home, consider your timing. My golden rule: avoid nap times and peak hunger times! A slightly earlier dinner or late lunch often means fewer crowds and a more relaxed toddler. Also, don't be shy to call ahead. Ask if they have high chairs, booster seats, or specific kid-friendly amenities. Knowing what to expect can save you a lot of stress upon arrival. The Ultimate Dining Out "Survival Kit" While the original article mentions activity books, I’ve found a well-stocked bag is a game-changer. Beyond coloring books, consider: New, small toys: A car, a few animal figurines, or even a mini puzzle. The novelty keeps them engaged longer. Mess-free art: Water Wow books or magic markers that only color on special paper. Snack arsenal: Even if food is coming, a few familiar snacks (puffs, fruit pouches) can buy you precious minutes while waiting. Practical items: A reusable bib, a sippy cup with a lid, and plenty of wet wipes are non-negotiables in my bag! Engaging Them Actively (Beyond Screens) If you're trying to limit screen time, or if your little one just isn't into tablets, there are plenty of ways to keep them engaged. We love playing simple games like “I Spy” with things around the restaurant, or having them point out colors. Involve them in the ordering process by letting them choose their drink (milk or water?) or pointing to an item on the kids' menu. At places like King's Korner, where my son was obsessed with watching planes "landed," the environment itself became the entertainment – look for those hidden gems! When Meltdowns Happen (and they will!) Despite all our best efforts, sometimes toddlers just have a moment. It's okay! Instead of letting those "stares from people" make you feel bad, remember that most parents have been there. My go-to strategy: a quick change of scenery. If you're on a patio, take a short walk away from the table. If inside, a quick trip to the restroom can often reset the mood. Speak calmly, offer a quick cuddle, and if all else fails, know when it's time to cut your losses and get the food to go. Your peace of mind is worth more than finishing that meal in distress. Ultimately, dining out with toddlers is a skill that improves with practice. By being prepared and having a few extra strategies up your sleeve, you can turn a potentially stressful outing into a fun family memory. Find those local spots that truly embrace "family and kiddos" and enjoy the experience!
